I loathe what Austin has become. And the traffic is among the worst I’ve ever seen. Once upon a time it was a great town
Austin has changed so much. All of the artists and musicians have been pushed further and further away from the city. It definitely doesn't have that hippie feel to it anymore.

Was there last summer. Hit Franklin's...excellent, but otherwise meh. Traffic was shite.
We headed to Leakey and the Frio for the family reunion.
Central Texas is amazing.
Austin, not so much

They were posted for two years. They made national news several times for months. It was on most of the political talk shows at that time. Your school newspaper, The Daily Texan, did multiple articles about it over several years. It was written up in the Alcalde, your alumni magazine more than once.
You sure don't strike me as much of a UTrans fan if you have no idea of what is happening on your campus over a period of several years. Not to mention when your school is on the national news.
Let me guess, you had no idea that your school passes out dildos to the students and the students wear them on their backpacks while going to class?
Pooor lsutigresfan, has no idea what happens at the school he is a fan of.

Well, the op was comparing 6th street with north gate, so yea, reference to aggy, cloaked, but still a reference.

I love Austin as a whole but last few years with the homeless crap really sucks; I think they removed them but not sure. I love the hill country though. Just so damn expensive, and liberalism is everywhere now .

That list about dangerous campuses posted here is among the most misleading things I've seen on this board (which is saying a lot).
Either it's just completely made up OR a UC-Berkeley student reporting someone snickering at their lavender mohawk counts a crime for this list.
The UC-San Diego campus, just for example, is isolated between the Pacific, a huge state park and one of the most exclusive neighborhoods in the US.
It makes any SEC campus seem like East St Louis in comparison (and I consider SEC campuses pretty safe).

The data was accumulated by a law firm in Houston. I linked it.
Their study uses data reported in the Clery Act 2024 reports.
Here are two other rankings on abuse of women and bigotry.
Aggy and Florida all guilty. Aggy was #1 in violence against women.

If you are young, and want to be rich, you are stupid if you don't explore Austin and the wealth being created everywhere in & around Austin
City has more 20's year old Millionaires than anywhere in the South

Ok, I get it now.
Most of these schools are just more likely to report and record hate crimes and bigotry -- and with the lowest threshold considering many of the schools in these lists.
That makes sense for UCSD as per my example of one student making fun of another students accent being reported as a potential hate crime.
However, that likely fits with most of them being less "dangerous."

Austin has always been known as quirky and original. People from Austin just kept them to themselves and did their cool stuff and public gems like Zilker Park, Barton Springs, and Ladybird Lake were full of fun locals.
Fast-forward thirty years and you now have a spazzed out, hurriedly constructed, incoherent downtown skyline that is boxy and unoriginal and crowds out a lot the fun space that used to be along the river.
You have way too many me too dubious quality restaurants and music venues.
quote:
And amidst it all you have the huge number of flat brimmed cap Cali douches and expat mid tier east coast Jersey shore finance bros flooding into the area at a record pace.
Great post.
This is generally the problem with any cool, unique area over time.
People bitch about homelessness and crime and they're certainly problems in general.
Ironically, as someone who has a shop in a "cool" part of a big city, the smattering of homeless nutcases and petty crime are the main thing keeping the neighborhood from being only quickly constructed condos for finance bros and spa day hos and all the "dubious quality restaurants and music venues" and chain stores they flock to.

You can’t tell me Austin is a popular place. Downtown is more dead than any other mid tier city I’ve been. You’re telling me 6th st beats north gate?
Austin as a city sucks so much for its size. Also $20 an hour parking is criminal.

That's your opinion. The good thing is I really don't care what you or anyone else on this site thinks of me.
Sorry to make you look stupid yet again.

It definitely isn't what it used to be, and my frame of reference is the late 90's/ early 2k's.
19 year old me got lit up by a cop for driving the wrong way through a closed Zilker Park at 11pm, and doing it in a bright red 300ZX with my drunk roomie in the lone passenger seat and a (thankfully unopened) 12 pack of beer visible in the small cargo area behind my seat.
Penalty? Being lectured on how the park was closed and I need to pay attention to one way signs. *Thank you officer!*
I hadn't started drinking yet (we were on our way to a party and my roomie convinced me to pull in Zilker so he could piss behind a tree) but even so there is no way college kids of 2026 face a cool APD officer like that. Back then it was understood college kids do dumb things, but the city itself hadn't gotten out of hand yet.
