I think people forget the parity of the SEC back in the day.

Sure, there were runs for teams like Bama and UF had, but overall it was pretty up and down.
A two or even three loss participant in the SEC championship was not uncommon.
That was before a handful of teams found ways to skirt the rules, but now with things more even, this is what you are going to get.

I remember back in the 80's even into the 90's
Teams weren't going undefeated in the SEC very often
It was a ground and pound philosophy until Spurrier came along
A lot of tight grudge matches

But even then teams still weren’t regularly going undefeated.
There is no recent era where teams just regularly went undefeated.

If you look back
B1G = MeatChicken + BuckNuts
ACC = sucked at football
SWC / Big 8 = Oklahoma and a backup
PAC = Southern Cal and a floater
SEC = The Six (started in the 1920, carried through the SEC split in the 30's)

Ehhhh....
There's a reason it's called the Big Six.

You forgot the independents of which there were many up until the 90s. Penn St, W Virginia, Miami, S Carolina to name a few. Several national titles went to Indies.

This had more to do with divisions imo, East dominated the 90s and then it was mostly the West in the aughts.
But parity is definitely here and I’m still flabbergasted at how many here are surprised by it. NIL and the portal have stripped away the ability for the powerhouse teams to stack their depth charts

Back when it was a beauty contest, you had to go undefeated just to get the pollsters attention. I don't think folks have fully accepted yet that not only is this no longer the norm, but it may now be a mark against you, as it now generally indicates a weak schedule.
