The classic bowl games and conference championships were the biggest games of the year. Lose a couple games? Not a shot- good luck claiming that national championship.

You played your rivals instead of trying to run from them. Differences were settled on the field.

Talking about players being paid: Forget about it. This is college, you're there to get a degree for free already plus myriad other benefits regular paying students would have never imagined.

12 teams in the SEC was considered a folly by many; most preferred to stick with 10 teams. The regional conferences actually made sense. For starters, Rutgers and Nebraska weren't in the same conference.

Games were more fun to attend and also more competitive. Upsets abounded. Leaving home games early was considered taboo unless you were getting clobbered after the half. Stadiums were full.

Politics and college athletics didn't mix well. That crap was left to professional leagues.

Have never heard of "targeting". There were personal fouls, unnecessary roughness, and if someone did something to intentionally hurt a player, the referee didn't have to take five minutes to review it.

Gone days... this playoff and players begging for money is the end, folks.

Also, there were more quality coaches out there. People like Jeremy Pruitt would have never coached a big school in those days.

TLDR

But I know you don't miss 1970-2000 college football because of the winning traditions of Moo State.

Yep

Unfortunately it is a different era today. There was some under the table gratuities given to the players but it stayed quiet and it was usually nothing over the top.

The rivalries on the field were still fierce and stadiums were basic entities without all the luxuries that are prevalent today.
I enjoyed that era too and have good memories but like most things in life, it changes and evolves.

For State, there are a lot of good things in place today. While I had a great amount of fun in Jackson at Memorial Stadium in the 70’s and 80’s, I love our atmosphere on campus with the junction and DWS.

With respect to the conferences, again there are some good and bad with the realignments. For the SEC, overall (and all kidding aside), the four new teams have been good additions.

For some of the other conferences, not so much.
Maryland, Rutgers, Nebraska in the B1G ? Really?
Colorado & Utah in the PAC whatever they are? Really?
ACC changes not as bad but WV in the Big eight or whatever they are called? Really?

Oh well enough is enough. It is what it is today and we just have to live with it.

Targeting is fricking retarded.

It amazes me that when two players are running full speed, juking, jiving, lowering their shoulder, lunging, reaching their body out, etc. that a player could get EJECTED FROM THE frickING GAME for an accidental helmet knock.

Look, intentional spearing....yep, ejection is warranted. But, non-intentional, frick that shite for ejecting a player from the game.

Money seemingly ruins everything. And the bigger the money, the larger the clusterf*ck. It's a microcosm of our country really.

Rich and powerful people, looking to be richer and more powerful, take something that's working and try to squeeze every last dollar out of it, totally disregarding what made it such an attractive sport in the first place.

When there's big money to be made, the vultures will swoop in to get their hands on it.

My only wonder is how long before they completely ruin what was the greatest game in America.

I actually liked having all the Independents. USM, Tulane, Memphis State, etc. would play about 5-6 SEC team each year and were competitive in many of them.

LSU was o-15 against Bama during that era in Baton Rouge if that is what you were referring to.

Already happened.

Don't get me wrong, I'll still watch. But the passion is gone.

Yeah, they've just about ruined my favorite sport. But given a little more time, I'm sure they'll finish the job.

Big issue was the lack of T.V. worth paying out to the SEC. That is why Texas A&M and Mizzou came in for that T.V. markets! Now Mizzou and Texas A&M are getting better in football!

Blame Texas and their Longhorn Network. Started the money grab and the arms race era of college football. With revenue becoming astronomical and payouts more public, it was only a matter of time before the players wanted their share.

I enjoy watching the old games from the 80’s and 70’s. Just watched some of 1985 Iowa vs Michigan tonight.
