I'm not on the coast, but I was there for a while with my job after Ivan came through and my cousin lives and owns a restaurant in Orange Beach. He's had to weather out several.
I wasn't going to let OP compare localized heavy rains and tropical wave force winds (not that they can't be bad and deadly) to what happens when you're at ground zero of a major hurricane. That's like comparing a briar stick to a gunshot wound.

I think the storms on the Gulf side are more vicious. I have been through >6 hurricanes on the Atlantic side, and while I was without power for two weeks a couple of times, none have been like Katrina or Michael.
I do live on a barrier island, and have seen massive flooding. It could be that with so many hurricanes, a lot of the possible mess is already gone.
God Bless and Protect those in Ida's way, on the coast and inland.
Remember the South is with you.
edit to add- The only thing the people in the interior miss during a hurricane is the storm surge, they get just about everything else (wind, rain, power outage, heat and humidity, etc.)
The storm surge is something else. It is like the ocean has laid a table and then the waves just ride it in.

My cousin who lives down there refused to evacuate, she didn't think it was going to be anything major. Well the worst is yet to come and she's already got a foot and a half of water outside. I have a bad feeling this is going to be a nasty one. Stay safe folks.

It's gonna be bad for Tennessee as well. They are still recovering from the floods and what's left of Ida is projected to go over Tennessee.

Having been to New Orleans post-Katrina when it was safe enough to re-enter I can attest that it was surreal. Once the water and mud receded everything was brown. No color. It looked like a post-apocalyptic movie. The water marks on houses were up to the second floor. Cars piled in the medians of roads like match box toys.
Residents had to wear respirators to enter their homes due to the toxic mold. All possessions were piled on the front lawn. Houses had a mark on the front indicating whether there were bodies recovered from them. It was insane.

T&P. This looks like a Katrina level storm.

We had air boats and drove about 100 miles to reach New Orleans. Once we got there and put our boat in the water we started receiving gunfire in which one of the guys or splash with water from one of the bullet. We loaded up our shite right then and there and left with the middle finger pointing back to them. Amazing that this happened when you were trying to help people no matter who they are.

Mississippi is going to get hit hard as well. It looks like McComb and Brookhaven will get hit pretty hard as well as the coast.
Praying for everyone in the path of this monster
