No that’s not factual. Mendoza might have not been a big star out of HS but he was very good at Cal. He led them to a 21-14 win at Auburn. Cignetti got him from the portal.

He’s a good coach that figured out how to take advantage of the transfer portal in an overrated conference.

In the regular season, they had 2 ranked matchups. Iowa and Oregon.

They are a good team but college football is way down this year as a whole because with the transfer system as is now, team’s have less depth. Playing a weak schedule kept them fresh and they have good coaching.

Is he an all-timer? Not in my opinion, but coaches can have nice two year runs.

Once actual rules are put in place for NIL and Revenue sharing as the wild Wild West system goes away, he will not be as successful.

Their schedule last year was even worse than this years. They are a good team and were great this year. I don’t think it is sustainable. They will still be a good team with a great year here and there, but he is not building a dynasty based on two years.

The biggest difference between Indiana and Texas Tech this year is a slightly better staff, and not having a high school coach with all the bought talent. It also didn’t help that TT was down to their 3rd string QB for the playoff game.

Talent wins championships. If he continues to get top tier talent there, they will compete because he has a good coaching staff. The recruiting remains to be seen, especially once they have a disappointing season and the momentum fades a bit.

I think he's an excellent coach but the model he used to win this championship isn't sustainable. The covid super senior stuff is coming to an end. Yea the average age of rosters will be older but its going to be much harder to have that experienced of roster in CFB going forward.

He was a 4 star rated transfer prospect by On3 and the 12th overall best transfer portal prospect int he country.

He was ranked below Beck, Iamaleava, and Mateer

Nailed it.

Both can be true, and there's nothing wrong with that.

Cignetti could still win another title, but it's probably going to be in a different manner, which would be even more impressive.

Bobby Bowden only won two consensus national championships and he was a Hall of Famer. No one could win the way he did today, because it's just not possible.

Slightly off-topic, but Bowden won once just on sheer talent (the Charlie Ward season). It was a great year results-wise, but that offensive scheme was insanely simple.

If you disagree, go back and watch some games... I even remember an announcer talking about it. If the QB lined up under center, they ran it like 90% of the time. If he lined up in the shotgun, they threw it. Sure, it was still on the defense to cover the routes and/or stuff the hole for the run, but they fricking knew based on formation what was going to happen, and it didn't matter. Imagine running that shite today

As for Cignetti, I don't think he's dumb; but I do wonder if he will implode. He seems like he's wound tight as hell.

I think the real question is what he does and how he reacts now that the spotlight is on him all the time when things aren’t going well. Maybe they go on a 3 game losing streak or something like that. He’s never had to deal with that kind of external pressure ever. No one cared about him or his programs until this year. Even last year, everyone thought of Indiana as a novelty so no pressure whatsoever.

I actually had a friend who was a huge FSU fan and went to some of their games at the time.

Ward was a badass, but don't tell my buddy I admitted that.

Along similar lines, I was also lucky to see Devin Hester play (a few years later at Miami) and he remains maybe the most freak athlete I think I've ever seen in person.

You just literally could not contain that guy.

If nothing else, Cignetti is proof that the right coach can turn ANY P4 program around. That, and the NIL and portal.

Indiana is a football wasteland. Don't tell me about all their rich boosters, they've been around more than a couple years and it never made a difference before. And their portal classes weren't like what LSU is doing this year (trying to build an allstar team), it's all system-oriented. Yeah, the guys are older, but we're talking about a bunch of guys coming over from James Madison and places like that. Elite underclassmen used to be able to dominate 5th yr seniors who weren't special. And they still do, but AS A TEAM the system can make up for that. Look at Iowa, especially on defense, as proof of that. Indiana ain't like LSU 2019, where you're going to see instant NFL starters and lots of Pro Bowl guys coming from this team.

You know who I think might make a play for Cignetti? Nebraska. If Indiana can do it, Nebraska can.
