I miss him and his deer in the headlights look at the start of the 4th quarter.
Very sad to see him go.

Just watch any Missouri game this year and you'll see the same look from their OC late in the game. Trust me...I saw it for 3 seasons in Knoxville. Too bad you don't play them again until 2022. He'll be gone by then.

Shouldn’t have gotten Croomed

I'm really bummed we never got to see more Mike Price antics. I wish I appreciated that as much at the time as I should have.

Alabama fans crap all over Shula, but guy did what he was supposed to do: be a stop gap while the team was on (well earned) probation (and the Mike Price fiasco...). He did a great job in 2005 given probation induced depth problems. He also left quietly and didn't have scandals while he was there, which was nice so tide fans could go on about "class and terdition" while he lead them to mostly mediocre results

What people don't understand is Shula was the coach because we had no options. I'll explain.
We started being investigated in 2000. Mike DuBose was the Head Coach. In 2000 DuBose finished up a 3-8 season and was canned before season's end.
We knew very well that Butch Davis wanted out of Miami. He came to Ttown, was ready to take the offer but wanted to know the situation with the NCAA investigation. Davis was gunshy in that he had taken a Miami program that was sanctioned and didn't want to deal with that again. He got very cold feet. We deal with 'Butch Davis is gonna be the coach to Butch Davis is heading to the Cleveland Browns'.
Enter the next round of candidates. Start with Tom Coughlin. He interviewed but was also being courted by the other NFL teams. He didn't like recruiting. Next was Dennis Franchione. Bama saw where the Problem was so decided to tell Fran it wasn't gonna be that bad, maybe a loss of one bowl game. He took it. The sanctions came down in 2002 and it was BAD. It was gonna be a career killer and for every year of lost schollies it takes a year to build back up. It was gonna be six years before he had a full team again and decided to bolt after 2002 season. With the no win situation at Bama for the next 6 years NOBODY, NOBODY would even interview. Our 3 finalists came down to Shula, Croom and Richard Williamson. None had been a head coach but they were cheap and would take the job even under the circumstances. Bama took the approach we need to get someone until the sanctions pass and then find our real coach.
At the end of the day, without sanctions, Fran would have never gotten the job. Shula would have never been interviewed. Butch Davis would have been the coach. I'm sure you miss Shula but honestly, we never expected to win much with him and it wasn't because of him. Nobody was gonna win with the situation we had.

Sometimes you just need a caretaker coach. When you find yourself in a hole... whether it be because of NCAA sanctions or from sheer lousy recruiting (Bielema did the incoming staff at Arkansas no great favors)... the first thing to do is find a coach who won't keep digging and make things worse.
Shula didn't keep digging. He stayed the course and when he left he handed over a program that was in a position to compete again. He wasn't a brilliant game day coach or masterful recruiter, but he did the job he was hired to do.

That look was awesome! As a fan of the team playing bama back then, you wait for the 4th quarter to start, hope to see the look, then when you see it, you just start the party as you know the game is won. Sucks saban doesnt have that same look.

IIRC, Bama blew quite a few 4th quarter leads.
As bad as Shula turned out to be, Bama rarely got blown out, just couldn't complete the game.

I know. I remember. He had some incredible stat about 4th quarters. Something like he never won a game bama was trailing at the end of 3, was like 0-7 against the big 6 even when leading to start the 4th or something like that.
It was amazing. And awesome. Couldn't wait for the 4th quarter in bama games to see that terrified look on his face.
