Lets assume SEC West.

They would try to snub their nose at the other teams in the division and outside of a trip to Austin would be a bad fit.

No way in HELL Mack Brown would've lasted this long.

They would be Auburn. The parallels are startling.

Don't kid yourself. Texas would compete for an sec west or east title almost every year

Too liberal to cut it.
It would probably make a&m leave tho.

The would win the west once every 5 years....maybe

Honestly wouldn't help their recruiting, they lock down the state of Texas anyway and I don't think that Brown is good enough week in and week out to win a lot.
I would say that they would finish 3-5th best case in the West and 2nd to 4th in the East.

This. Not many other schools in the SEC could go in and snag Texas recruits. They'd be good.

Texas could compete. They have more resources than any team in the country.

Compete being the key word.

athletically (football) they'd be OK and would challenge for the SEC title from time to time.
otherwise, esp. fan wise, they would have to leave because the rest of the conference would boycott until they got kicked out. i would just as soon sit in a small room with chain smoking life ins. salesmen on speed than with a group of tejas fans.

And demand a 20% cut of the total conference proceeds.

To elaborate they would be Auburn. The share the same defensive philosophy, which is evidenced by the coaches who have coached at both schools. They are always talented. Their offenses are up and down. They compete for the conference crown regularly. When they get Vince Newton, they win it all.
They beat Pac 10/12 teams for titles.

This. They have more money than God and sit on top of the top recruits. They just don't have the right coach.
