The textbook scandal under his watch. Furthermore, it lasted for over two years all the way up until the early part of Saban's tenure. A coach running a clean program doesn't allow shite like that to happen when they are on probation.

Oh, come on. How would the coach know there was a glitch at the supe store? It wasn't even a sport/athletics specific loop hole.

another racist LSU fan checking in. Mike Shula did the best anyone could under the circumstances. Croom was a great guy, but not better coach than Shula. I suspect your comment was motivated by the color of his skin more than anything else

you'd be wrong ... many fans still bitch and moan about the injuries to croyle/prothro and forget he could've said 'no' to coming into the situation ... i'd like every "fan" that still hates on him for those injuries to take a dive off a tall building into a pond filled with metal spikes and vipers ... injuries are random and happen in all kinds of situations, and the players want to be on the field ... guy came in and steadied the ship after the price fiasco and we should be grateful, imo ...

Lets not forget who did whom a favor. Shula was a mediocre NFL assistant coach with zero prospects of being a head coach. The Bama job was a life preserver. He did a very mediocre job and made some horrible decisions (he hired a cell phone salesman to be his OC) and some downright insubordinate ones (blatantly dismissing an order from Mal). People want to thank him for coaching at Bama, thats fine, but dont act like he was some savior who came to Bama because he loved it and we owe him this huge debt of gratitude.

He did a good job... got the ship headed right direction... Biggest mistake was letting Ray Perkins hang around.

Shula was Muschamp before Muschamp was Muschamp, minus all the apoplexy. He tended to field good to great defenses that sometimes could win him a lot of games, but his offenses were plodding and predictable, and he couldn't win the big ones. He also leaned way, way too heavily on a dynamic playmaker (Prothro for Shula, Deebo for Muschamp). And he was stubbornly devoted to a certain OC despite the fact that they were crappy and ended up costing him his job.

Shula gets a D- from me. We won nothing of consequence during his tenure and did not beat Auburn. We also wasted an NC-caliber defense in 2005 and did not even make the SECCG with them because the offense was so fricking pedestrian.

My senior year as a walk on was Shula's first season. He is a good guy, but he was a little in over his head. He needed to be more commanding. The injuries to Croyle and Prothro were devastating. He came in to a less-than-ideal situation and did the best he could, and most fans appreciate that, but you don't get a pity party when you are paid millions to coach Alabama. I think he went 1-11 against UT, AU, and LSU, with the only win coming after a miraculous play by Roman Harper.

I don't think he would have ever won a championship. Maybe if he could've signed Tebow, he would've lasted longer.

I give him a C (I give Kines an A because I like that crusty old SOB)

Sometimes that is the most important thing a coach can do, get your team through sanctions and hand off the program to the next coach. I'd say he gets a solid C.

The nefarious presence of Ray Perkins was definitely one of Shula's biggest problems.

C- I guess for at taking the job and staying out of trouble. We would never have won shite with Shula even if we had a full compliment of scollys. No coach had more of a knack for snatching defeat out of the jaws of victory than Shula.

Mike Shula took this job realizing he was probably going to be the sacrificial lamb. Get us through probation, restore some semblance of class after Dumbose, Fran and Price. Did he make mistakes along the way? Absolutely. Is he a class guy that deserves better from Bama fans? Absolutely.

As someone stated before, Shula was not a good coach and even if we were not in the middle of the crippling sanctions he still would not have won shite. Think about it, how many offers has he gotten before or after the Bama gig. He had some good moments but, at times, the Bama job can make even mediocre coaches look good.. Fran and Dubose both looked like world beaters at times. Other times they looked like Butch Jones.
