The system was Pete take every shot unless a teammate gets wide open. Given how shitty the rest of the team was, as far as I’m concerned it was implemented to prepare Maravich for the ABA/NBA and the AD didn’t gaf because the program was historically shite and Pete was the main attraction. It’s not like he was lighting it up, the guy was shooting sub 45%
Why do you think he was nicknamed pistol? All he did was shoot

Ya that one.
Harlem globe-trotting showboating Pete first, team second daddy basketball ball hog. LSU basketball could not have been more mediocre with Pete being being treated as the one and only thing that mattered about LSU basketball his 3 years in college with his dad. Huge 4th place in the NIT though that final year.
He was a world class talent, sure.
But let's be real and not revisionist just because of folk lore legend: that was some mickey mouse BS losing team basketball
The Press Maravich days of running a one man traveling basketball circus with his boy are vastly overrated. That is unless trying to play actual competitive championship team centric first basketball doesn't matter. Perhaps it was all about the highlights, media attention and tickets being sold.

3 years after Maravich graduated, the mens basketball team from your preferred school played a regulation basketball game of 40 minutes in which they scored 11 points total (and still won by 5)

good thing it wasn’t “all about the highlights” that day

He sat next to me both times he went to accounting class. I saw every home game. He was phenomenal. When he was a freshman, they were ineligible for varsity. The home crowd would leave after the freshman game, which shows how bad our teams were. He WAS the team, and any chance at victory, depended on Pete. The other teams just had to defend him. There were assist missed because his teammates were not always ready for his passes. Others have mentioned the lack of the three point shot, but many of his shots would have been 3’s because the defenses doubled to shut off his drives. He was special.

Man I would have loved to have seen a Pete Maravich play with those Shaquille O’Neal and Chris Jackson LSU teams.

He did score 68 vs the Knicks in the NBA. Just sayin'.
ETA: Pistol Scores 68 vs Knicks The backwards shot at 3:48 was creative.

Literally said above he was a world class talent. He was good as a singular player when he wasn't unnecessarily spinning like a ballerina with the basketball at midcourt to showoff to fans for 10 minutes of the game each night.
Does not change the fact that the Pete era at LSU was about his highlight package and not the well being of the basketball team itself. LSU basketball pretty much sucked arse when electing to play 1 and 4 vs 5 basketball games every night of his career. Press Maravich and the LSU basketball program as a whole back then were beyond underwhelming.

Finished 2nd in the SEC behind a loaded Kentucky team.

It truly does not seem possible. Wish I were alive to see the greatness in person.
