But even with LSU's good baseball fan support, it is simply dwarfed by the support (attendance, ratings, money, merchandise etc.) generated by football, even when football is bad.

Well, you can't compare college baseball to college football. Even though there are some very good baseball clubs on the east and west coasts, it's largely a regional sport.

LSU baseball fans are devoted. We've set attendance records for 17 years straight. We love it just as much as Kentucky loves their basketball.

And my point is that most fans really don't as evidenced by things such as attendance, ratings, money, etc. If there was true interest on a widespread scale, there would be money to be made via larger parks, bigger tv contracts, more merchandise sales, and you know all of these are maxed out to their greatest capacity (i.e., people don't leave money on the table). The comparisons are not "asinine" at all. They are instructive. At least more instructive than a few posters saying yes I care and talk about baseball no matter how my team is doing. Proof of fan support / interest is in the numbers more than anecdotal evidence.

ETA: LSU isn't really the best example of the question of support when the team is bad. Haven't they been to the NCAA tournament like 24 of the last 28 years? They are pretty much always good.

Funny. LSU and South Carolina just built brand new parks. Ole Miss just spent a ton of money renovating their park, as have a lot of other SEC schools. And while college baseball is still a regional sport, the OP just asked about the SEC. As for TV contracts, if you're paying attention over the last two seasons you've noticed ESPN/ESPN2/ESPNU showing regular season SEC basbeall games to a national audience at least once, often more, a week. Many more games are on regional CSS, Fox Sports Net, etc every week. Things don't go from nothing to a multi-billion dollar TV contract overnight, but the TV aspect is growing as we speak.

It's relative. A bad year for LSU is when we don't host our own Super Regional.

We don't have a huge following in baseball (not as big as I'd like), but we are very loyal. We support the team no matter what.

I don't expect us to do a whole lot this year due to our top 2 pitchers heading to MLB, but we have a bunch of young guys that could surprise some folks in the SEC.

Yeah... LSU Baseball is my #1. Some people may not agree or even believe me, but that's fine. I know people that are the same way about LSU basketbal, which is even more admirable, because we suck more often in that (in recent memory) than baseball or football.

Football is great. I go to every game and get really pissed off at shite just like every passionate SEC football fan, but baseball is where I grew up playing at a young age and going to the Box with my dad.

Baseball kinda gets in your blood. It's no wonder why the sport has such a high percentage of older fans, because it sticks with you.

Sure, probably a majority of SEC fans don't give a rats arse about their school's baseball teams, but I assure you that a large portion of LSU fans will always be that way, with Miss State and South Carolina being right there as well.

FWIW, I would much rather go to a baseball game than a football game.

I like football better, but baseball is just a different experience. I don't really know how to explain it.

It's not as intense physically or emotionally. I love showing up to the ball park 15 minutes before first pitch with a buzz and a dip. I could watch baseball all day. I'm 21 and in the minority there

Can't answer that because I can't remember what that's like.

This is why you can't even discuss USCe or LSU when answering the OP question. He specifically asked about when teams are doing poorly.

Of course the die-hards will all come out and say how important it is.

+1

I grew up at the Box in the 90s and I played baseball for 12 years. I'm now a season ticket holder and I don't see myself ever relinquishing those tickets.

I love LSU football and basketball, but baseball will always be #1 for me. LSU baseball is the equivalent to Kentucky basketball.

I won't go so far as to say I like baseball better than football, but I'd be okay if I never set foot in Tiger Stadium on a Saturday night again.

I'd like to get season tickets for baseball next year. It's more enjoyable to watch football at home. I want to be in the ballpark.
