Jesus Christ, the SEC's refs are terrible.
Posted by lsutothetop on 11/28/14 at 12:08 am
My team was cheated out of a win anyone can be proud of with the refs stealing the game for us. I'm pissed off that I can't even really enjoy the win as much because I feel like it was unearned.
Texas A&M was cheated out of a fair chance to win. That's frickin bullshite.
Both teams got fricked routinely throughout the game on horrible calls on either side. One of the worst-reffed games I've ever seen.
This is far from the first game this year where the refs have been terrible, too. LSU and Alabama was a clusterfrick this year too due to refs. I'm sure if we sat down as a conference's collective fanbases we could find a couple dozen games played in conference this year that had terrible reffing.
How do we do anything about this? This is a fricking disgrace.

Well, no. Youre fricking wrong. You showing compassion for this piece of shite woman who had nothing to do with raising her child which is the sole contributing factor that he turned into a thug piece of shite himself is what is wrong with this country. The types of people that show compassion for Michael Brown's mother in this situation are lighting police cars on fire.
I'm not lighting any cars on fire. I've THRICE now condemned the riots. I just have the capacity to empathize with people and treat them like human beings, even if they've fricked up before. That's not excusing her terrible parenting or anything of the sort.
Don't you know anything about what Christ teaches us? We're supposed to show compassion for ALL people, REGARDLESS of their past mistakes. Who the frick are you to tell me otherwise?

You can't "get the picture" until you take off your blinders!
jesus christ, learn how the frick to read before you mouth off
i support the nonindictment and condemn the rioting and looting. i even said the latter part before your idiotic spiel. i also said that her son is a shitbag and excused NONE of his behavior
all i said was that mocking a grieving mother for being in denial about her son being a shitbag is in poor taste.
your lack of reading comprehension and immediate rush to attack anyone for no reason is far more what's wrong with this country than anything i've ever done

It would be a 4-game skid: Bama, Arky, A&M, bowl game

How did he play at least 51 games, log 517 tackles and average 10.7 tpg?
Not taking away from his career accomplishments but those #s don't add up

Sorry you've never lost someone close to you and/or can't empathize with it, I guess? I can't understand the position that says that someone put in such a situation should immediately shut off their emotions, and all the years of memories to the contrary, and make a perfectly rational assessment of someone's character like you're demanding here. It's not at all realistic.
If she's still doing this a year later, sure, but you have to remember that this only happened a couple months ago. That's not a lot of time to move past something this traumatic and be detached enough to analyze it reasonably.
Again, condemning the looters, sure. Poking fun at people with no prior attachment to Brown who have suddenly decided this is some grand racist conspiracy and are being delusional about it, sure. But the guy's mom? How can you expect her just to accept all that right away? That's just not how people work. You have to give them time to grieve and separate themselves from the situation.

But you expect that from a child. That shouldnt be how our trained professionals with weapons act.
Completely agreed. This looks a lot worse than I figured when I saw the story. I was with the cops at first but I'm thinking I'm not now.

I'm sure if you thought your son wasn't a complete shitbag, and suddenly one day he got shot killed by a cop, you would handle the situation perfectly rationally, too.
If you'd limited this thought to anger or whatever at the guy inciting a riot then that would be one thing, but mocking a mother who lost her son - regardless of the circumstances of her son's death - is fricking terrible. What do you expect her to do? "Oh well, turns out my son was a shitbag who robbed a store. It's a good thing I can turn off all the years of buildup of intensely strong emotions and attachment to my biological kin with the flip of a switch."
It amazes me that some people seem to think that in order to be on the right side of things, they have to go after shellshocked people caught in the crossfire.
You can think the no indictment was the right call and condemn the riots without taking cheap shots at a grieving mother.
Get the picture?

re: Reasonable Expectations for the Big 3 Sports

Miles has to show improvement next year or we need to cut ties before we turn into Texas IMO. If we still suck at the QB position and the offensive woes from every year since 2008 (sans 2013) are still here, he has to win the West at a minimum if he wants to stay. If we show improvement at the QB spot and our offense is good, or even just average with clear improvement and a clear progression toward being good, then I can accept another 9-4 or even 8-5 season if the circumstances are extenuating. But if we end up with another 9-4 or 8-5 year, 3rd or worse in the West with the same problems and no realistic hope of improving them, Miles has to go. It's harsh, I know, and it runs the risk of making a rough hire after Miles and making things worse, but a season like what I'm talking about would be three years since we were serious contenders for the division title, three years of finishing middle of the pack in a conference that's only getting stronger over time, and four years since we won the conference.
Basketball, Jones has two years on his deal and that coincides nicely with Simmons's year in college next year. At a minimum I think Jones needs to make the NCAA Tournament during Simmons' year, and I'm thinking he needs to make it this year as well. What I'd like to see is making it this year while finishing in the top half of the conference, and next year getting an NCAAT win (and ideally a Sweet 16 berth, although that might be asking a bit much) and finishing top-5 in the conference. But he needs to make the tourney both years IMO.
As for baseball, we made it to Omaha 2 years ago and I think last year's team could have made it to Omaha if they hadn't had a bizarre meltdown in the regional. Mainieri is doing a fine job and I can't imagine him not meeting any realistic expectation one could set for the next couple of years, so I'm not worried about it.
TL;DR:
- Football needs to fix the problems that have plagued the program since 2008 and finish 9-4 or better. High standard, but we look like Texas at the end of the Brown era to me, and that's not acceptable.
- Basketball needs to make the tourney both years. Ideally during Simmons' year we make the Sweet 16, but I think simply expecting two tourney appearances and at least one win between them is fair.
- Baseball just needs to continue what it's been doing for the last several years; unless we miss the tournament two years running or something outlandish I don't see much reason to worry about the baseball program.

re: Just recruit a big ten type QB and all will be forgiven!

The last QB we recruited and developed who could be considered a "Big Ten type" QB took four years to become serviceable. I really don't think it's about the type of QB we recruit - if you can't develop QBs (we can't), it doesn't matter whether you bring in the next Russell Wilson or Cam Newton or Tom Brady, they're not gonna live up to their potential.

re: The other issue, "Prevent Defense"
Posted by lsutothetop on 11/24/14 at 4:27 pm
This isn't a unique problem to LSU. It's innate to the game of football. Assuming even talent, an offense that has a reasonably good passing game typically can march down the field on a defense when they play with a 2-minute-drill mindset. What you're seeing is playcalling optimized: no inefficient running plays, and passing plays called to be as high-% as possible because there's no margin for error. In most cases where a defense beats an evenly-matched offense, it's because the offense is calling plays inefficiently.
There's a pretty simple way to see how this is innate to the game. The fact that we even acknowledge "prevent defense" or "end of game drives" as unique entities separate from the rest of the game should say something about the phenomenon I'm talking about here. If end-of-game drives weren't any different from regular drives, why is it that we talk about them as being different? Why do several teams (LSU included) play great defense all game and then mysteriously collapse at the end?
Instead of reducing it to an arbitrary "clutch" factor that, evenly applied, doesn't make sense (why is a team not "clutch" for playing great defense for 58 minutes out of 60?), let's look at the underlying dynamic of end-of-game drives. EOG drives are optimized for gaining the largest amount of yards in the shortest amount of time, it's no surprise that a team should struggle with them the most.

No, not really. As long as you don't make it about your insecurities with the attention he gets from her, you're not elevating anyone. You have enough reasons from your descriptions if you have to explain - the guy apparently is in love with himself/has a big ego, since he always talks about himself; he's a bit of a sleaze since he just spends his time schmoozing women despite being in a relationship. He's annoying. Not wanting to hang around annoying people doesn't make you inferior to the annoying people.

"Hey, I know A is your friend and all, but it's a real drag to have to hang out with this guy, he annoys me. What do you think about doing XYZ instead of going to the bars next time?"
Of course you ought to have a pretty good idea of what XYZ can be beforehand. Like with any problem you're having in a relationship, it's important that you (a) clearly identify the problem, (b) have a realistic solution and (c) don't make the problem about the person you're dating if it's not explicitly about them (as it's not here).
