People used to care about

Yes. Before they started fricking around with the sport in places nothing need to be changed. Coupled with NIL and unrestricted free agency every season, and the playoff establishing the era of “bowl opt outs” no one cared about these games, which is my entire point. People USED to care about them, and now they’re just rebranding them as playoff games to try to get people to care again, but they won’t. It might solve the opt outs issue at least.

Just like over time people will care less and less about the regular season. CFB isn’t a tournament sport and attempting to make it into one is really stupid especially with the structure they’re moving forward with. It is entirely short term thinking ignoring the reality of the benefits of having low time preferences in favor or what they perceive as immediate short term gain.

The second thing is again; you’re comparing football to basketball which is also very stupid. Games like Michigan losing to App State, or other big upsets will never happen in a playoff setting where the team with an overwhelming talent advantage is juiced and ready to go. It happens in the regular season rarely because the heavy favorite didn’t take the game seriously and looked ahead of it.

All this does in the end, is further help big brand teams who struggle hard in October (take Oregon this year for example) to be able to fix their teams and get right and still sneak into the playoffs.

It does absolutely nothing to help the little guy teams people who support things like this usually assume it does or want it to. They’re just simply going to be offered up as sacrifices

It's a cluster crap of an idea they're trying to implement. Currently, the SEC conference championship game had more viewership than any of the opening round games of the playoffs. We support our conference; we hate each other, but we SUPPORT our conference. There's no way the SEC is going to keep the SECCG with a 24 team playoff. It will soon be something you have to watch on ESPN Classic.

Appreciate the info. That didn’t answer my question. How will they avoid having games on at same time? If its playoffs you don’t want games at same time.
If no game is on at the same time, then each round will be longer than a week and not all games would be in prime time.

Future OOC scheduling just became pretty irrelevant

But this will make teams more willing to schedule tough OOC matchups instead of putting a gimme game in their non-conference schedule.
