Auburn-barn= named after a barn Grant burned down on his way to somewhere important. Panama City? (spring break).

What about Auburn?

I think the story is that Auburn is taken from a poem.

Auburn has had 4 name changes throughout their history. They started out as the East Alabama Male College; then became the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Alabama; then the Alabama Polytechnic Institute (API), the name under which they won their national championship; then finally in 1960 the name was officially changed to Auburn University.

I dislike Auburn as much as the next person, but that was really lame. Sorry. And Sherman was the one burning everthing down, just thought I'd clear that up.

Surely that has to be a coincidence.

Of course it is.

The runaway slaves is the worst nickname ever.

If running and hiding is in the nickname, It's not a good nickname for a football team.

Our name didn't come from the Rebel alliance in star wars.

Joe Grant was on his way to Ft. Walton Beach back in the late 60's when he stopped at a hay barn on the side of Hy 98. He rolled a dobbie, smoked most of it,flicked the roach into a pile of hay. Burned the barn to the ground. Much like Bama did the last time we played au at BDS. End of story.

Starkville is named after a Revolutionary War hero, General John Stark.

MSU didn't officially become the bulldogs until 1961, but they have been called the Bulldogs since 1905, when a reporter wrote about MSU's bulldog style of play after shutting out UM that year. After that game, MSU students held a military funeral for the Rebs, and a bulldog was placed on top of the casket. In 1926, a bulldog was there representing MSU in a parade in Meridian. In 1935, the first Bully mascot (named Ptolemy) was present on the sidelines at State games (BEFORE Georgia, btw).

True story: My great-aunt was a true deep south belle, born and raised in the small town of Covington, GA. My grandfather was English, and could play the fiddle just a little. When he met my great aunt (she had married my grandfather's brother) he wanted to make a good impression on her, so he had taught himself how to play the song "Marching Through Georgia" (not knowing the history of the song); he played it, and she poured a glass of water on him.

Tigers: No, also came from a William Blake poem
I always thought the Tigers nickname came from the same Goldsmith poem (The Desert Village) as the town name. Line 1 - "Sweet Auburn! loveliest village of the plain";Line 355 - "Where crouching tigers wait their hapless prey"

I must truly admit that after hearing from you about the roots of rammer jammer, I feel a whole lot better about that song even as a Tiger fan. I can just envision the second day of the campaing at Gettysburg withe the grey and yellow striped Alabamians peppering the hell out of those blue coats. Give'em Hell. Keep your confederate money boys the south is gonna rise again.
