Ok, but how do you decide the top 30? National Championships, conference titles? All time wins?

Well, there is historic (Chicago, Yale, Army, etc) and then there is historic (Notre Dame, Michigan, Minnesota, etc), if you know what I mean.

I just rank alabama 1-25, and then the rest of us.

Championships are not the way you measure a program because they are given not earned.
This best way to measure a program is by undefeated seasons, confrence championships, 10 win seasons, major bowl appearances and wins.

You should see their home record. One of the greatest college football programs of all time IMO.

National Titles, followed by conference titles, followed by all-time wins and bowl appearances and wins. You can throw 10 win seasons in the mix if you really want to be anal. Nothing else really matters.

I say all-time wins. MNCs can be too easily manipulated. But if you haven't been relevant in 80 years, you get pulled...ie Yale, Harvard, etc.

Bowl appearances used to mean something...

No. Figured Bama fan would just go to numbers and claimed titles.
All-time record depends upon who you played...National Championships are awarded...depends the era, the competition, integration...and your record against the elite.
Elite 8 (No particlular order)
USC, Notre Dame, Michigan, Alabama, Texas, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Ohio State.
Last 50 Years (1962-2011) # of games against the elite.
USC...........(54-31-5) 63%----90 games flex
Texas........(42-32-3) 56%----77 games
N.Dame.....(48-49-4) 49%---101 games
Oklahoma..(53-57-5) 48%---115 games
Michigan....(42-49-3) 46%----94 games
Ohio State.(33-39-2) 46%----74 games
Alabama....(13-16-1) 45%----[ only 30 games ] sinking
Nebraska...(30-42-1) 42%----73 games
Now during your glory years:
From 1971 to 1981 Alabama had a marvelous record of 116-15-1 (88%) in 132 games.
But they were 98-5-1 95% (104g) vs Southern teams and 18-10 64% (28g) vs everybody else / Non-Southern teams.
Lets, take a look at Alabama from 1967 to 1975
From Alabama's Bowl game in 1967 to their season opener in 1975, they played only 12 games against Non-Southern teams.
Bama won only 2 of the 12 games vs Non-Southern teams going 2-9-1.
1967 Texas A&M 7-4 (Lost 20-16)
1968 Missouri 8-3 (Lost 35-10)
1969 Colordado 8-3 (Lost 47-33)
1970 USC 6-4-1 (Lost 42-21)
1970 Oklahoma 7-4-1 (Tie 24-24)
1971 @USC 6-4-1 (Won 17-10)
1971 Nebraska 13-0 (Lost 38-6)
1972 Texas 10-1 (Lost 17-13)
1973 California 4-7 (Won 66-0)
1973 Notre Dame 11-0 (Lost 24-23)
1974 Notre Dame 10-2 (Lost 13-11)
1975 Missouri 6-5 (Lost 20-7)
That 116-15-1 would turn into 84-48
if they played non-southern teams and continued to win only 64%.
Bama's record against notables:
Texas 1-7-1
Oklahoma 1-2-1
Notre Dame 1-5
Michigan 1-2
USC played 141 games vs the Elite 8.
Alabama played only 37 games vs the other all-time legendary programs.
