How did Houston Nutt lead a D1 program?

I don’t mean to shite on the guy, but watching college football live, his takes are just very fan-esque. It’s not the same as watching various other coaches who are now pundits, who speak to it on a level that actually makes it interesting, because it feels like an extra insight from someone with next level knowledge.
I feel like Nutt swindled his way into most of his jobs by just being charismatic.

Better question is how did Houston Nutt form a team better than the rest of the SEC West twice?

Very fair
Living proof short term success is gained in recruiting
Long term is another deal

And yet he'd have still won 10 games with MSU last year.
He was willing to adapt to his players strengths and not be stubborn on one offense.
He couldn't recruit but he knew had to gameplan. He had some big wins at Ole Miss and Arkansas to prove that.

I can't speak for his time at Ole Miss, but for all his shortcomings, Nutt was a damn good motivator. Many, many times Nutt's Arkansas teams would win games they had no business winning and I fully attribute that to Nutt being able to get his team ready to run through a brick wall for him any given Saturday. Dude was all Hog and knew how to get that reaction out of his players. That's a side of coaching I don't think gets touched on enough in a world focused on analytics and numbers.

A 3* out of Arkansas that was tough, motivated and giving 100% > A 4/5* out of another state that's not as tough and not giving 100%.
Player toughness and the motivated player giving their all is way overlooked.

Nutt is actually a pretty good coach when he inherits a talented roster. His basic problem is that he greatly struggles to get those rosters on his own.

What jobs did he swindle into?

Completely untrue. Nutt was a college QB that didn't develop QBs and wanted run the ball every down.

Nope. Nutt recruited big bruising linemen and pretty good RBs. I'm not just talking about McFadden. He also put together way better defenses than we gave him credit for. Dude could not put together competent special teams other than a solid punter.
Nutt would have lasted longer, but every offseason he floated his name at every job opening to get more money and a longer extension. Then he got caught up in the off field drama. He wore out his welcome.

He could motivate and play call. When he had someone’s left over talent he was extremely dangerous. Too lazy to recruit, so he could never sustain success.
True story—Nick Saban recommended him as the head coach when he left for the Dolphins.

Houston Nutt was the best Arkansas coach in decades. Two SEC West titles. Then he gives Ole Miss one of their better teams in decades. I'll never understand why so many shite on the guy just because he ran a simple offense that worked.

didn't frick up inheriting Ford's recruits and then won a 3-way tiebreaker?
Coaching when LSU and Alabama were down helped too.

Yeah, I remember. Nebraska came calling for him, too.

In hind sight,I'd bet Nutt wished he'd taken that plane to Nebraska.
He took the two year probation hit from the previous staff and knew it was coming.
I wonder what Nebraska would be now if he had boarded that plane.

By chewing on his fingernails. He had them laced with something that made him smarter as a coach than he actually was.

I mean can you name the last coach to take Arky to a SEC title game?
Can you name the guy who beat the 08 Gators at their house?
Dude left a large footprint on the SEC last decade. Was incredibly impressive game planner.
