Better question is how did Houston Nutt form a team better than the rest of the SEC West twice?

Because Alabama got caught cheating and Auburn somehow shite the bed at home twice.

A little piece of advice. If he asks you for an apology, you better apologize.

He had a lot of energy and his players loved him. Found quite a few underrated guys that developed into good players here.

Couldn’t develop a QB to save his life though. Stoerner was the only good passing QB he had. Matt Jones was just a freak athlete. Pretty sure we led the SEC in rushing for like 8/10 of his years here.

He is a fantastic motivator. Goes a long way in college. He never consistently had top notch teams but he hardly ever lost the team either. Some really smart x and os guys out there who can't get their guys to buy in and even some guys who can initially recruit but ride their guys until they get tuned out.

I laughed. Always do. Can't drive by a Captain D's without snickering like a child.

I'm tempted to say Petrino, but it didn't happen on the scoreboard.

What's really interesting about that Florida win is that he struggled with Florida at Arkansas. As others have noted, Nutt was a great motivator, but the flip side is that it's hard to get super motivated for everyone and that led to unexpected losses.

The best example of this is when you look at his record against teams he coached against every year and compare it to those he didn't. Using the SEC East as an example, he fared well against our regular opponents, Tennessee and South Carolina (9-8), but he struggled against everyone else (3-12 record against the other 4). He fared well against our biggest historical rival, Texas, but lost to UNLV and Minnesota in bowl games. The 2007 team was good enough to beat LSU in Baton Rouge, but lost to every other ranked team we played that year, with the exception of South Carolina.

He only outright won the west once. The second time was because Alabama was on probation.

Honestly, football changed quite a bit during Nutt's tenure in the SEC. Recruiting became basically its own sport with its own dedicated fan base. We've also seen frequent changes in offensive philosophies. I don't think coaches like Nutt have the energy to keep up with recruiting and are too proud or set in their ways to adapt offensively. You know, you saw Saban make his gripes about hurry-up offenses, and then make the necessary adjustments when he saw there was no helping it. Nutt brought in Gus Malzahn under duress and we saw him sabotage his own OC just because Malzahn's offense was the future, and he didn't want to be upstaged. This was a huge part of Nutt's problem, he was really not someone who came off as trustworthy.

But we saw the toll current college football took on him during his last two seasons at Ole Miss. He wasn't going to get any better and recover from that 2–10 season. And clearly Arkansas made the switch and the proper time. We'd have maybe another decent year or two out of him.

Houston Nutt was the best Arkansas coach in decades.

I don't know how this ignorant shite was upvoted. He was better than his predecessor, who won an NC elsewhere, so technically not really. That's about it. Ken Hatfield, from '84–'89, went 7–4, 10–2, 9–3, 9–4, 10–2, and 10–2. Before him, Lou Holtz from '77–'83 was 11–1, 9–2, 10–2, 7–5, 8–4, 9–2, and 6–5. Before him was Frank Broyles, who won us an NC and is a college football legend. And then Nutt was followed by Bobby Petrino, was was a better coach in every facet. Houston Nutt managed to go 10–4 one time and squander talent that had national implications because he was petty and stubborn.

We've hired two duds since then, but Nutt is still firmly in the bottom half of Arkansas' coaching quality.

Bryant spoke about this and Saban's key to success is how his players stay motivated

Yep. I always said about him he was great in getting his teams pumped up to beat teams that they shouldn't beat but he was pisspoor at losing to teams that he shouldn't lose to. A Jekyll and Hyde type coaching syndrome.

He was a great back against the wall coach and a master of back room politics.

His name is literally Houston D. Nutt. I’m amazed Saban hasn’t hired him as an offensive assistant just to make deez nuts jokes.

Sometimes you feel like a Nutt, sometimes you don't.
