It was down to Ed O and Dennis Erickson...AD Pete Boone wanted Dennis Erickson but Chancellor Khayat wanted O...USC was all the rage at the time and Khayat was infatuated with Ed O’s recruiting chops.

Khayat and Boone flew out West to interview both of them. Dennis Erickson supposedly made the comment “Yea, I’ll coach your team for you” during the interview and that turned Khayat off. He wasn’t coming back to MS without a coach so he hired Coach O.

All that said. Coach O is the type of coach who could make the playoffs at LSU, because it fits him perfectly. But not sure what O would do somewhere else.
