Interesting question:
Which fan base was the first to use the “horn’s down” sign?
I would have thought: Arkansas, Texas A&M or Oklahoma but AI says differently!

Texas’s ‘Hook ’Em Horns’ sign originated in November 1955, according to ESPN’s Dave Wilson. The first reported use of the ‘Horns Down’ gesture came from a Baylor fan in 1963, per Wilson.

I first recall seeing it on tv in 1969 against Arkansas. You know which game.

Awesome pic but as the poster before me pointed out it's photoshopped.
These are real though:
Bert had his flaws but he was really good at trolling.

A subversion of Texas' "Horns Up" hand motion, the Longhorns faithful don't take kindly to having their symbol thrown back in its face. Texas' previous league, the Big 12, went as far as classifying the "Horns Down" gesture as an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.
quote:
Unfortunately for the Longhorns, the SEC has been far less accommodating. Under league rules, the Horns Down gesture is legal, at least in most cases. At SEC Media Days in 2024, SEC coordinator of football officials John McDaid explained that "Horns Down" would be allowed unless it's clearly being done to taunt Texas players.

So many penalties coming on this thread.

Horns down is a gesture of respect and Texas should lean into it.

We played in 1969? Never heard of it. Not like the president was there or something. That would give us PTSD. Especially if we blew a huge lead in the 4th quarter or something. Nice troll attempt.

What is stunning is that it took Texas fans 60 years to figure out that that sign looks kind of like cow horns....
And that it took 8 years for somebody to invert it.

I love it. I hope it stays legal. I laugh every time I see it when they play someone other than us.

That’s what AI is saying - don’t doubt it, all the SWC had it in for the Longhorns

Texas fans love it, it’s the Super Bowl of living rent free. Texas fan tunes into two teams playing, neither are Texas. Good chance you’ll see a horns down when camera pans to crowd. Sips beer and laughs
