No trash talking , just real opinions.
I am 88 and try to make one home game a year as it requires travel but watch every game on TV. I have a question for those of you who care to answer.
I have never understood the fascination with Ewers as an elite QB, as I have always seen in my eyes, a weak arm, a slow processing of what he sees in front of him, and a real hesitation to stand in the pocket. So why did the pundits , media etc see him as a Heisman Candidate and NFL player ?
They watched the same games I did so what am I missing.
Thanks

My honest, serious opinion with no trolling:

I never thought he was NFL-caliber. I think that he had a star-studded supporting cast and a smart OC who played to his strengths. Plus, playing against most Big 12 defenses will make a QB look better than they would against SEC or B1G defenses.

God bless, sir.

The returning quarterback of a playoff team is going to get some consideration heading into the season, just look at Milroe.

Things always look worse after a loss. I don't know that Ewers was the whole problem the other night...Georgia has made quite a few good QB's look normal.

Ewers is probably the most talented of an average group of QB's right now. So that may be why everyone considered him elite...because I heard it also. Texas looked fantastic against a bad Michigan team, the whole Big 10 is down this year, The true test of how good Ewers is will be how he responds to adversity because that is where the elite QB's step up.

A lot of sports personalities get caught up on hype and stats without considering why a player has thpse stats. Even good college QBs can be very pedestrian in the NFL. A QB's ability to "see" the defense is absolutely critical.

The QB of a contending team usually gets hype.

The fact that it’s Texas and that it’s year 1 in the SEC with a cake schedule? Steroids injected into hype machine.

The fact that Texas beat Alabama last year makes it even worse.

Agreed, but I was very surprised to see him on the cover of NCAA 25.

Glad to have you here and posting at 88.

I think Ewers probably WILL play in the NFL. On the right team he'll be a starter.

Why do I say that?

The NFL is a business. They want QBs that are smart, will learn the system and not make mistakes. They obviously need good skills and the stars combine all that with great skills, which Ewers doesn't have.

But he'll make a nice living as a back up or mid to lower tier starter in the NFL.

Sadly, he shows poor decision making by attending school at Texas, which will be a knock against him.

All this assumes he survives the grinder that Arkansas will put him through when he visits Fayetteville.

He lit up Alabama last year and played well in several other big games.

He's a little inconsistent, but being the starter on a big-name program in the top 10 is going to get a lot of attention.

I wouldn’t call him an elite qb. Arm strength is decent, if it’s a play where his first option is available he’s pretty good.

The OL I don’t think is good enough to allow a lot of time for looking at targets, plus he probably knows that and doesn’t help. He may just be slow at processing what he sees. When the qb knows his OL probably won’t hold up he tends to stare down the primary too.

I’ll use Pavia as an example of a smart qb. He recognizes the coverage based off the motion, he knows where the ball is going, if that’s not there he knows what option 2 is, and if it’s neither he’s fine with getting 4-5 yards by pulling it down and go to the next play.

His clutch 4th down throw that sealed the game on us was his 3rd option. Pulling it down wouldn’t work so he found the 3rd and made a perfect throw.

They do this every year with qbs, especially those who are on winning teams. Some heisman qbs have been real head scratchers for sure.

You may want to sit out going to Fayetteville, you have to walk uphill every where you go. It’s the damndest thing.

Btw, you may be the most senior member on this board.
