But look at Bryce Young's passing percentage and TDs. He's ahead of Mac Jones TD numbers after 5 games.

Does it really matter how he's throwing them?

Kind of. We need to find more ways to push the ball down the field and generate YAC. You can't reasonably expect to go on 4+ 8-12 play TD drives against an elite defense over the course of a game. You have to be able to move the ball in chunks when you have the opportunity.

Even in 2018, a lot of those big plays were RPO slants that were thrown 10 yards and the receiver ran for most of the yards. Tua wasn't that great of a deep ball passer either.

ETA - A lot of those big plays in 2018 and 2019 were also WR screens that were very well blocked by the other WRs.

We lost Mac, Davonta, Waddle and Najee.

Those guys don't come around everyday, even at Alabama.

Very simple answer…there aren’t 3-4 first round picks at the skill positions this season. Williams, Metchie, Robinson, Trey sanders are all decent players, but they aren’t the same caliber we’ve had the past 12 seasons

I don't think O'Brien is interested in abandoning the play-action stuff. And all that is really missing is the occasional long ball. The receivers have to help out as well as the OL.

Bryce Young saw one of his deep balls dropped by Williams against Mercer, while Traeshon Holden muffed another one against Miami. There’s also been a couple of pass interferences that could have ended up as big receptions. Young has misjudged a few of his deep passes as well.

At this point, regardless of the longball, BAMA is finishing drives, I'll take it. This team is getting better every week.

Not as much talent at WR? No harm in that when you lost four first rounders.

This is all it is. Jameson Williams and Bryce need to get on the same page to start hitting some deep balls. People say that Bryce has been overthrowing, but Jameson has also been running the routes wrong. Bryce is not an inaccurate passer - just look at some of the incredible deep throws he's made to Billingsley and Williamson in the first game, and Metchie (who dropped it) vs. Florida.

There have been a lot of drops.

Our best WR - Agiye Hall is in the doghouse for his academics apparently. We might even see him in the lineup by the time the Georgia game rolls around - doubtful, but who knows.

They used to. I mean Calvin Ridley, Amari Cooper, Derrick Henry, Josh Jacobs, Damien Harris, Kenyan Drake, etc etc.

This is probably our least talented group of skill players in a LONG time. Our best guy is a transfer from OSU, so we've been whiffing in recruiting apparently.

Agiye Hall looks like a beast, but Saban won't let him play for whatever reason. Trey Sanders looks like a beast, but Saban won't let him play for whatever reason. Camar Wheaton was looking good in camp, but he got injured - he might be available later on in the season.
Who frickin knows.
Our best playmakers right now are our TEs, and Jameson Williams from OSU. Brian Robinson is a pretty damn good power back, but not much speed.

I occasionally read comments that Tua wasn't a good intermediate to long ball passer, even from Alabama fans, but I don't know why, because it isn't so. Granted, as his numerous injuries impacted his game, he wasn't as good as early in his 2nd year, but Tagovailoa is the ncaa career leader in pass efficiency, and right, I know that isn't the same as a great long ball passer.

I think, though, that people forget how good Tua was when he was given the chance his first year, and before the injuries the 2nd year about mid season. Injuries, be it hand, arm, leg, hip, turf toe, every injury will impact a player's game, especially a quarterback.

Anyway, not to further belabor the point, but here is an article from week 6 of the 2018 season, showing that Tua was in fact a goood downfield passer. This writer said Tua Tagovailoa's passing chart shows just how insane his downfield passing has been

click me

moral of the story is Tua good, injuries bad

Yes there is a lights out offense. Ohio State. 4 Maseratis in backfield. Olave, Wilson, Jaxon Smith-Njigba, and Trevon Henderson. Very good offensive line.

Defense highly questionable but not offense. Last I saw averaging 8.9 yards per play.

We're #3 nationally (#1 in SEC) in scoring offense with 45.6 points per game.

If we start losing I’ll worry.

Until then it looks like a pretty good job of coaching to maximize the chance of winning.

You g has missed a couple of slants that would have been big chunk plays. Throws it behind the receiver which is a miss, or receiver has to break stride to catch it.
When the RPO slant game isn’t there, the sluggo isn’t there.

He is also not as accurate as the last two with the deep ball.

It's pretty simple:
Bryce is not throwing catchable deep balls
Brian Robinson is like the current version of Zeke, he just doesn't have those big play in him
The only guy we're playing with elite speed is Jameson Williams.

So it's basically Jameson or bust. Hard to believe Ohio State didn't want him, he's incredible.

Any outsider can see that he is not as good as Olave or Wilson. Got beaten out by Jaxon Smith Njiga (sp) who is currently averaging 19.4 yards per catch and who has great hands. Behind them Julian Fleming and Emeka Egbuka were both No. 1 rated receivers in their respective years.

Jameson would have gotten playing time, but he wouldn't start. Very reasonable for him to transfer as he is a very good receiver who could use some improvement in his techniques but would start for 95% of college teams.
