I used to work near that stadium back in the early 80s.

It's kinda cool, in that the top of the stands are at street level - that's 4th Street at the top of the pic, you can walk right up to the back of the main entrance and not even realize there was a stadium there until you cleared the trees.

Here's a shot of the entrance from 4th Street:

Apparently they still hold the Tuskeege vs Morehouse game there annually. Nice to see it's still getting use.

Pelican Park - where the 1908 A&M-Lsu football game took place in New Orleans.

The way I heard it Tulane thought using the Superdome would be a big recruiting tool, but it turned out students didn’t wanna go all the way downtown for a game and as their program sank it became an embarrassment to have 13,000 people in there.

I'm getting it confused with something else. I remember reading about an old wooden stadium that burned somewhere and I was thinking it was Tulane's. Just an honest mistake.

State played Bama at Greer Field in Meridian twice during the 1920’s-30’s.

Field is still there though it is not in use anymore.

think UGA hosted a fair number of games in Atlanta back in the day for that reason.

Not many but they play à few home games at Grant Field.

I wish I kept a list of those stadiums OM played at back in those days. It was pretty interesting info and I would love to figure out where they were located and look at the area on modern google maps. Really would love to know where that Memphis stadium was located.

That was old Crump Stadium....Saw several games there back in the day. It was downtown Memphis.

I was on the OM staff back in the early 70's....V.H. stadium looked pretty much like that.....No wonder we played most home games in Jackson.

ETA to add Montgomery. Also, I wonder if the transition in the Georgia-Auburn game from neutral side in Columbus to home-and-home coincides with the construction of I-85. I know it was around that time that the interstates were built, and driving between Athens and Auburn would be so long without the interstate, they may have just agreed to meet in a mutually accessible place until a I-85 came along
.

Another little known reason, but was a big deal back then, that Auburn didn't have many home games is because of disease.

Auburn fans, especially the women, were known to have the very contagious hoof and mouth disease, supposedly contracted from eating some cows they probably poisoned themselves by turning them into cannibals.

Also, Yellow Fever ran rampant among the rural and uneducated Auburn populace immediately surrounding the current University of Auburn. It was just kind of known to avoid Auburn for these reasons and several more that were related to animal husbandry and illegal and immoral acts.

Vandy's Dudley Stadium was the first stadium built in the south specifically for football. 1922. Dudley was responsible for the SIAA which was the predecessor of the Southern Conference and the SEC. We are spending over $300M for sports facilities starting this year. Looking forward to seeing all the changes.

I actually played in a high school game there against Carver-Columbus. Shittiest playing surface I ever played on. Grass was ankle high and dead because it was mid November.
