Herbstreit says Ohio State should’ve beaten Clemson last year, got jobbed on a few calls

Ohio State will have its hands full on Friday night trying to stop Trevor Lawrence and Clemson, but Kirk Herbstreit believes Dabo Swinney has done the Buckeyes a massive favor with some of the things he has said about them leading up to the playoff game.

Herbstreit said on the ESPN College Football Podcast this week that Ohio State head coach Ryan Day should have an “easy job” preparing his team for Clemson. Herbstreit thinks the Buckeyes already feel they should have beaten Clemson in the playoff last year, and now they should be motivated by Swinney saying they don’t belong.

“Ohio State is gonna spin it into, ‘Not only should we have beaten them a year ago and we got jobbed on a few calls but now their coach is saying we’re the 11th best team in the country,’” Herbstreit said. “Coaches are always looking for a reason to get their team collectively fired up and to get angry and Ryan Day has an easy job this time around to get his team ready.”

Swinney has said multiple times that he does not believe Ohio State deserved to get into the College Football Playoff due to their abbreviated schedule. He stood by that again on Monday, saying it is nothing personal and that he has “all the respect in the world” for Day and his program.

That respect isn’t going to mean anything to Ohio State. Not only does Swinney believe they haven’t done enough to earn a playoff spot, but he also ranked them shockingly low in the final coaches’ poll of the year.

Of course, Clemson may now have some bulletin-board material of its own to use. Day made a comment this week about the Tigers possibly stealing signs. It sure seems like there is no love lost between the two sides.

You gotta score TD's to beat Clemson. You can't kick three field goals in the red zone and beat that team.

frick Ohio State but Clemson got a bad targeting call on a sack that absolutely changed the game. Both would have lost to LSU by double digits anyway

Also Twitter Link to the Overturned Fumble Last Year. Objectively one of the worst review overturns of all time

I didn't watch the game that close, so I have no idea if that's true or not.

I know Ohio State would've been smacked around by LSU. They might've put a slightly bigger fight than Clemson, but probably still lose by 14 to 21 points.

Ohio State should have won but not because they got hosed by the refs. They should have been up 24 or 28-0 and had that game put away early but JK Dobbins dropped one TD pass and tripped on his way to the end zone for another one.

Clemson or tOSU in 2019 is a moot point. Both would have been run by LSU (Clemson was in fact).

He's right. Ohio State was the better team, and played the better game that day. Anyone who watched the game knows it.

But neither was going to beat LSU anyway. So it didn't make a whole lot of difference either way.

If Herbie didn't cry about it, I don't think he really cares. Or maybe he only cries when he pretends to care, which would mean he cares a lot.

I guess it was the refs who threw the int in the end zone to lose the game.

That crying homer. Him and his booty buddy Galloway can both kick rocks.

Herbstreit is the biggest homer out there. Who is he rooting for with two sons at Clemson and one at tOSU?
