What I would like to see to help defenses vs. the up-tempo, spread offense (which won't anytime soon) is getting rid of the 5-yard rule on defensive backs/cornerbacks.

I agree completely with herbie. Just not my kind of football.
One thing I know as an Alabama fan, the best way to get the rules changed is to start doing it ourselves and yank victory from the jaws of defeat like we did so many times this year using this gimmick.
We had no business going 12-2 this year or winning the sec. That is the truth. We were subpar at best, yet managed to out gimmick enough teams to win the sec. We were not that good...and I think that's what really bothers auburn people about losing that game to us.

I think alot of us around here would appreciate it if you take some of your own dang advice and tell the bama football team the same!!! Sure would be alot easier to win the damn SRC....

Do you all know what stops HUNH? Sacks, Runs for Loss, and Incomplete passes. If your defense did their job, the opponents won't be in a hurry to get to the next play. About it lessening the talent, duh, thats what "getting an advantage" is all about. Finding a competitive edge. SEC weakness is that players have become too large to keep up with HUNH, thus becoming more tired. Being big works for what they are doing, but if someone else runs something different, it doesn't mean it is wrong.

It was a joke if you couldn't tell. I would never take a dig at any french Canadians who dominate the gridiron with elite speed.
Who's racist now????? You got butthurt over a joke and now you look like a racist.
My work here is done.

Weak, the faster you go the faster the defense has an opportunity to get off the field. Stop crying and play defense.

Football is cyclical, and good defensive coordiantors are able to stop the spread HUNH offenses pretty easily because they aren't really complicated. I would be in favor of some type of defensive play clock every first down or something.
Herbie made that comment because if he said anything else,he would be percieved as favoring his alma mater against Oregon. He tries to remain as neutral as possible.

Good Defensive Coordinators have looked like shite (at times) against these HUNH - including Smart and Boom. A lot of bend but not break . . . and then break. A defensive play clock of what? 5 seconds or so?
And Herbie making those comments has nothing to do with OSU. Once you get out in the real world and someone else is paying you money to be objective - you are objective. He goes to the University of ESPN now. The one exception is Dr Lou (but it is part of his act now).

What I saw in the Oregon/FSU game was that Oregon was making them defend the entire field. The way to stop hunh is to force a stop or negative play. Disrupt the flow of the offense.
Oregon has been running this system for awhile now. Every year they've lost at least one game. They lost to auburn a few years ago in the nc. It's not like it's some unbeatable tactic.

I suspect that the majority of the older group of posters would look more favorably on some mechanism to at least slightly slow the game down (if they'd answer honestly
). We older folks remember when there were some great games dominated by defenses. We probably appreciate the strategy and physicality of the more defensive games than the youngsters who crave immediate gratification with flashing scoreboards. I'm not saying that either is best, just stating an opinion on why it is.

Not slow down the game, just quit handcuffing the freakin' defense. Pretty soon the QB will have a red jersey on during games so he can't be touched. Like I also mentioned previously, allow the DB's to have more contact with receivers as well.

I would agree with the rules being slanted in favor of offense. Unfortunately I think they want high scoring games because they get better ratings and it's all about $ anyway. Personally I enjoy watching games won in the trenches. Great defense, great rushing.
The thing about hunh is if you can force 3 and out it puts a ton of pressure on the other team's defense. Oregon's advantage (imo) comes more from good play calling and a very accurate qb who makes excellent decisions in the read option game.
To me the best pass defense comes from your d-line. If a qb has all day to throw, no secondary in the world can keep people from getting open. That's why quick, short passes are so hard to defend. You don't give the line time to get pressure. But if the other team drops a lineman into the right spot...
Teams might be better playing Oregon with 3-4 or maybe even 5 linebackers since it's obvious their advantage comes from speed.

This. You dictate the tempo right back. This requires being high risk and jumping routes and anticipating playcalls. Be aggressive. They are going to score anyway. Ding! Ding! Ding!

rush ends getting smaller and quicker. Bert getting bigger and bulldozing them. ahead of curve. in 5 years pro-style will have mariottas sitting on sidelines most of the game. they wont score every possession but they will NEED to.

I just think there needs to be a discussion about whether it is really in the best interest of the game.
He asked if this what we want football to become? And it looks like he assumed it is indeed what folks want football to become so he hired a guy to change his offense and speed up Bama's game as well.

Finally another rational ranter

quote:Yes, slow the game down...between plays. Let both sides initiate their strategy equally. As it is now, the defense has to follow the game plan of the offense, and do it at the offense's pace.
Not slow down the game...
Look, as a Bama fan I believe we did our best work offensively this year in the HUNH, but I still don't like the concept.

Very true. Saban adapted well and will continue to adapt. Bama will be fine and will prosper as long as Saban is at the helm. Bama has recruited premo run stuffers and gap fillers. Saban will now recruit more athletic and leaner linebackers and edge rushers. It is already happening.
I have talked some smack but I think I see what you guys were saying when you said this years Bama team overachieved. You can already see the personnel changing.
I'm not trying to dickride, its just really impressive how hard he coaches year round.
