Why would you think that? He had already stepped down and spent quite a few years outside of the game. If it was that important to him he would have rushed back. Bobby drove in a ditch and was only out like 6 months.

You could say this about all coaches.
Yes but no one complained about Herman, just him not getting players which cost him the important games. NIL would have solved that for sure.
The only thing is Texas is a job that needs a coach that only does the hand shakes, pictures and kissing babies.. then one that does the actual coaching.

“If you take into consideration Mullen at Florida had better talent, facilities and a much weaker division to play in than at State, he did a much worse job at Florida. Not to mention he inherited a state program that had been to 1 bowl in 8 years and guided us through the strongest years in the West averaging 8 wins a season”
People like to criticize Coach Croom but he left Mullen with a great foundation in place plus a great recruiting class. The 2010 State defense was legit and was all Croom recruits. Now granted offensively we were not very good. Mullen did a great job building our offense as well developing QB’s but he did walk in to a good situation at the beginning.
Mullen’s problem at Florida was that he won too fast. Had his team’s records been in reverse each year, he would still be the HC. I thought he would struggle the first year or so and then gradually get better. The thrown shoe and the collapse of the past season did him in. Had his record been 5-6, 8-4, 11-2, 10-3 in that order over the last four years, then the view him would be different.
He really screwed up leaving State after 2017. The 2018 team with him at the helm would have won 10(+) games and may have challenged Bama for the West. That team was loaded but with a new coach/staff nothing gelled.
Moorhead was and still is a good coach but the 2018 State team had great expectations and it is generally difficult for a new coach and staff to parlay that into kind of success that was expected. Throw in the disaster of the Florida game early in the season and he lost the fans early on and never really gained them back.

He did better there than I thought he would. That was a terrible hire by Stricklin.

Terry Bowden crushed it his first two years at AU with Coach Dye's recruits, then flamed out with his recruits.
Didn’t he stop the paying of players ?
That could have been the issue…….

Charlie Strong at Texas. He had Louisville rolling and was getting great players from Florida.
He's the guy I now point to when talking about successful coaches possibly leaving for bigger jobs. A dude that had it made and now can't get a head coaching job. Sometimes there's no need to mess with a good thing going

if shitt arse greg mcgarity had the ultimate say he would've hired mullen to be our HC in '16. Can you imagine if mullen was our HC and kirby was at either AU or SC?

If you’ve seen the movie “Friday Night Lights” when Billy Bob Thornton meets with the boosters in his office and they tell him exactly what he should
Be doing to win games — that is literally the university of Texas in a nutshell. Their boosters are the most egotistical pieces of shite in college football and will never win shite bc they won’t let a head coach actually run the program.

All of the coaches at Texas since they last won it all.

Also thought Dan Mullen would be way more successful than he was, though he didn’t exactly crash and burn. He just didn’t live up to expectation. Had he stayed in Starkville I think he would’ve continued to be successful and challenge for the west every other year or so.
State fans were pretty confident he wouldn't do well at Florida because of his recruiting and conservative play calling in big games, but he would have been good enough at State and would still be coaching and making $5 million a year.
I don't know about challenging for the West with any regularity at MSU, but he would have in 2018 with the #1 defense.
