Of course, everyone will say Saban. But he was still kind of a unknown up and coming head coach at the time with a 34-24-1 record at Michigan state.

Les miles... 28-21 at okie state.

Ed O....

What makes LSU think this round is gonna be different?

Well, had you only paid attention to the context of Saban, Miles, and O from the original post and how he had removed Saban from the mix! Reading comprehension is a thing.

LSU doesn't need the greatest Xs and Os guy - they need a guy that can manage talent. Mesh it. Get them all on the same page. Then not be obstinately conservative like Les Miles.

We're all talking like LSU has to hit a home run here. I think there's a dozen coaches that can win at LSU. Napier was one. I do not think, long term, Riley was one - he would have lost control of that thing. Jimbo would be the same poison he is everywhere he goes.

Aranda will work. Stoops will not - too conservative on game day and will let the players get a bit too wild. Not Kiffin.

Charlie Strong would be a home run at LSU. Not kidding in the slightest.

So LSU did indeed MAKE Nick Saban is what you are saying? Finally some sense.

Brilliant comment. Orgeron won a natty 14 years after Saban left. Some mighty long coattails.

LSU has an AD who's one trick is to find an established coach that is disgruntled in their current situation and offer an obscene amount of money. There was just someone else at the table doing the same this time and the coach chose the other guy. So Woodward is trying again with Kelly.

Probably the biggest hire in lsu football history at the time was Bo Rein and he died in a plane crash before ever coaching a game

Scott got Fisher to Aggieland without any trouble or drama. Scott better realize it isn't the same lure to BR and he better change his strategy and quickly!!

The luring of Fisher to A$M was simply due to cold, hard cash and nothing else. Coaches come to Baton Rouge because they know that they have a better than average chance to win a natty.

Bill Arnsparger. Nick Saban . Bo Rein. All were “ big names” when hired . Maybe not household names, but definitely guys with big reputations in the profession.

Look at what Jimbo left at FSU. I'd say "luring" Jimbo to A&M would be about like luring a starving man to a buffet. Jimbo needed an out - and the Aggies obliged.

Just as in working life - you know how to judge a coach ? One way is this - would the school take him back ?

LSU would take back-then Saban back. Same for Florida and Spurrier.

FSU does not want Jimbo back. That is - as they say - a tell.

Are you talking about Arkansas going to win the division in the next 2 years?

I would say pulling Bill Arnsparger away from the Dolphins was pretty big. Out of nowhere, as I recall (but I don't recall as well as I once did)

I’m ok with the success rate of all three of the listed above!
