We did lose to them under Saban. I figure that's about the same time frame Bama loss to La Tech more or less.

tennessee is our second biggest rival.
my great-grandfather went to school at alabama, my grandfather graduated from alabama, as did my parents, numerous aunts & uncles & cousins, as well as my husband and myself... they all considered auburn as alabama's main rival. anyone who says they are not is either from far north alabama or just trying to troll auburn fans.
alabama has had a lot of pop-up rivalries...florida in the '90's and a couple of years ago & lsu when saban was hired in tuscaloosa & the last few years. but those are just based on who's hot now. it takes generations to build true rivalries.

We have this discussion every two months it seems like. 65-70% of Bama fans consider AU to be their biggest rival and 80-85% of AU fans consider UA to be their biggest rival. If you're a Bama fan from far north Alabama or a proud AARP member, it's UT. If you're neither of the two, you're trolling. If you're an Auburn alum from Georgia, it very well might be UGA. If you're not, you're trolling.
And spacewrangler saying he considers UT to be Bama's biggest rival is the equivalent of diddydirtyaubie or TTsTowel trying to pass off UGA as being AU's biggest rival in their opinion...it's complete and udder bullshite. Their posting history says otherwise.

I'm honestly surprised that so many Bama fans consider Auburn th bigger rivalry. I guess people will say I'm trolling, but I don't think Auburn could ever reach the level of disdain I reserve Tennessee. It has more to do with my experiences with the 2 fanbases than anything else.

I don't know how it's a surprise...go look at Bama's scout or rivals page. Go look at tidefans.com or woolyal.com. Compare the Auburn threads to UT threads.

If you don't know who Alabama's biggest rival is I would highly recommend going to Hardee's on the morning of the Iron Bowl. Preferably Hardee's in Vestavia Hills (Greater Bham). Every old fart in the place is drinking free senior coffee, talking smack and wearing either orange and blue or crimson and white. It is an experience that will stay with you like the brick you get in your stomach after eating the new Cheddar Biscuit Combo (add sausage)!

Tennessee may have once been Alabama's bigger rival but those days are long past. The only ones who claim otherwise are nostalgic older fans who still have yet to let go of the 1960s.

Some of you need to spend more time around Tennessee fans. You're obviously not thinking clearly.
At least I can hold a conversation with an Auburn fan.

This. Bama fans don't start 2,000 pg megathreads about UT. I've never seen such obsession on a similar scale in my life. My bama friends, or really any Bama fan that I know, never talk about UT in the offseason, or at any point honestly until maybe the week of the game. The Iron Bowl is one of the biggest events of the year in the state of Alabama.
I'm not pretending to know how they all feel about it, but any reasonable observer would come to the conclusion that they are far more obsessed with beating us than UT. I doubt any Alabama fan on this board would seriously rather lose to AU than UT if it were their choice. It's difficult to understand why this is even under question.

If Tennessee football gets back to where it once was, I think it will become more obvious they are Alabama's main rival. Auburn just won a national title last year, so many Alabama fans might be riding that wave at this point. Tennessee is a much deeper rivalry, though.
I look at it this way: if Auburn were to move to the SEC East, I would rather drop them off the schedule and keep Tennessee.
I'm so confused by all of the Alabama fans who care so much about Auburn. I don't want to lose to Auburn, but I want everyone to beat Tennessee.

I hate Tennessee almost as much as I hate Auburn

Auburn is clearly Alabama's main rival to 90% of Alabama fans. The list goes Auburn and then Tennessee and then nobody else. However, to the clear majority of Alabama fans Auburn is easily the biggest rival, the question of which game they'd rather keep is not as cut and dry. Most would still say Auburn, but it wouldn't be as big a majority or as simple an answer. The Auburn game is fueled by pure hate, and that rivalry wouldn't go away even if the teams didn't play. The Tennessee game is fueled by tradition and so many other things, and I'd be willing to bet the older generation would rather keep it.
Again, Auburn clearly the biggest rival followed by Tennessee and then nobody else. And I'm sure most would rather keep that game if forced to choose, but it isn't as cut and dry as the "biggest rival" question.

also regional location can play into this
I got an aunt that lives in Georgia and she hates the Dawgs more than Auburn and Tennessee combined just cause she has to live with them
