First of all be patient, this damn drive can very 2 to 3 hours due weather and traffic.

The usual problem areas are I 12 north of Covington due to construction, Baton Rouge due to idiocy and congestion, The Atchafalaya spillway due to construction at the end of the spillway before Lafayette, right outside of Houston before you get to Baytown due to construction, and right after Katy Texas due to construction again. The two construction zones on both sides of Houston are typically not that bad unless you hit them during heavy rain which happens to me about half the time. Of course, Houston traffic itself is always good for a 20 to 30 minute delay, and the traffic around Austin is ridiculous.

There is a Buccees in Baytown, gas currently at 2.96 a gallon and another one on the other side of Houston in Katy, which has a giant bay of car washes, and then another one in Bastrop which is about 30 to 40 minutes from Austin. There is also an In-N-Out Burger place right off the interstate in Katy Texas. If you get caught in the traffic and Baton Rouge there are two good’s Superior Mexican restaurants close to the interstate, and if you have kids etc. I would highly recommend getting off at college taking a right and turning in right at the Walmart on your left to go to Coffee Call drive through and getting the beignets fingers. Best in Louisiana and you don’t have to risk getting car jacked. If you want to eat around slidell there is a great po boy pick up spot there that’s unreal.

Cops: Watch your waze but in mobile they are generally only between exit 10 and 15, when you get to Mississippi, just set it at 75. I have seen over two dozen cops along that 70 mile stretch many times. They are almost always some between Moss Point and Ocean Springs and Always some all over Gulfport. Probably the only safe space is the stennis exclusion zone, but they were several there last time.

In Louisiana sometimes right before welcome center but typically around Covington again due to that damn construction, if you see them giving tickets that’s good because they are not at an accident. Sometimes around Hammond, and now the spillway due to the construction at the end. When you get 20 minutes past Lafayette lock it down again, numerous speed traps as seen on 60 minutes both sides of Lake Charles.

Texas isn’t really bad, maybe some of the locals can cue in here. There is always a cop writing tickets between 1-10 and Bastrop but I can’t really get a good fix on him so I don’t know his range.

Again waze and radar for weather. After you get off 10, it’s a nice drive into Austin, check out the zebras at the Freebos Ranch and all the hunting lodges, Start of that Kloches place etc. If I go Friday I will update this in real time.

Public Rest Stops are right after state lines, like you would think.

You can also go an alternative way through Brennan Texas by getting off 10 in Houston or Katy but it is longer due to two lane roads so don’t do it unless it’s a bad wreck.

Can you buy a steak anywhere in Texas before 4 PM? Just something I've never accomplished.

If you're driving I-10 between BR & Lafayette, set your cruise on the Atchafalya Basin Bridge at the speed limit. They have cameras installed at the beginning and end of the bridge and are timing how long it takes you to cross. You will absolutely get a ticket in the mail if you go over the speed limit.

Stop at the Scott exit just west of Lafayette. Several good options for boudin and cracklins. Billy's and Best Stop are your better options. The pepperjack boudin balls will change your life.

Speed trap-wise, on 290 headed from Houston to Austin, other than the one-stoplight town of Ledbetter (you'll see what I mean) and sometimes Brenham, you'll be fine. There are way more speed traps going from Dallas to Austin than Houston to Austin.

I can't really speak to anything East of Houston. I've only done that drive a couple times.

Oh god no. Most of the N-S interstates are infinitely worse than any E-W one.

You're right, just read an article that said they're not up and running yet. However, the speeding fines are still doubled, so don't get caught the old fashioned way with a laser either.

Regarding Houston - I’ve always seen cops writing tickets on I-10 east of downtown Houston, between the beltway and downtown.

I-10 west of downtown widens after the 610 loop, but is a madhouse. So less chance of speeding tickets on the west side of town.

Find the outbound HOV lane entrance if traveling during peak traffic times.

Couple of other notes:

There is a Buccee’s in Katy.

The straight interstate highway route is I-10 and then 71 to Austin.

The alternate route to Austin from Houston is via Highway 290 which takes you through Brenham. This route has easier driving compared to I-10, but has more small town stoplights. Slightly slower route but not by much.

But if taking I-10 and 71, I also recommend the Kolaches at the Hruska’s market/ gas station along Highway 71 in Ellinger.

Good post but one correction:

quote:

There is a Buccees in Baytown, gas currently at 2.96 a gallon and another one on the other side of Houston in Killian maybe, which has a giant bay of car washes, and then another one in Bastrop which is about 30 to 40 minutes from Austin. There is also an In-N-Out Burger place right off the interstate in Katy Texas

That Buccees is actually in Katy and its the next exit past the In-n-Out.

Make sure you always have water before you cross the Basin Bridge. I have been stuck twice, once for 6+ hours. Seriously, pee and get water before you cross.
