You’re taking a run at the playoffs. You need to retain staff. Who’s the most competent to stay?

It’s pretty easy logic, really.

Probably had to give it to him so he would stay for the playoffs. Probably the smart thing to do since you can just axe him next season & put on a true coaching search.

I have trashed him as a defensive coordinator constantly. He sucks at it.

But he recruits well and players love him. If he hires good coordinators and stays off the sauce he can have success as a CEO type coach

Why in the wide world of frick would any of us consider doing that? This is an awful hire.

It’s their only choice at this point

Where was he going to go? LSU was not getting rid of Baker to make room for Golding.

They don’t even want to conduct a search. LSU can’t help it that Ole Miss AD is a clown.

How about Josh Heupel? He's about run his course at Tenner.

A respected coordinator from a playoff team?

I don't want him to leave, but you might be able to hire Glenn Schumann from UGA for example. Better DC and recruiter than Golding.

I get it's a weird spot for Ole Miss to be in and there aren't a ton of easy answers, but I am pretty sure Pete would have done it as an interim and then you could have made long-term decisions later.

What exactly does this gain you vs doing a search in 4 weeks? Some continuity with the portal stuff maybe? But any offensive player doesn't give a rats arse that Pete is still gonna be there.

Maybe he gets a 3 year deal where you can move on if it is a disaster like the post-Leach situation at State. But goodness.
