It would be in the best interest of the SEC to bring the end of year rivalries together for uf, uga and usc. The real way for the major conferences to make additional money in the future is by adding content not states. 13 game seasons with expanded playoffs. Might be foreshadowed by the new scholarship limits.
1) Those three rivalry games are heavily viewed.
2) Having those games in conference will open up room for better scheduling.
3). You might have different alignment with teams but it will help create divisions that can be more traditional. For example Uga playing Tenn, Florida, Auburn, USC, GT and maybe a Clemson or Florida State every year for their group then having 5 other rotational SEC matchups. In my opinion when the SEC teams knew pretty close which team they would be playing in order traditionally will really be missed by the current structure.

I may poke the Bumbles but I do wish they were in the SEC for their solid book larnin. Same for Tulane.
Of the trilogy only Sewanee never got the sugar daddy Duke and Vanderbilt did. I have been back down there since covid and it is still 2 weeks beyond the middle of nowhere but it is still a beautiful place to visit.

I agree. GT should be invited back.

“Part of Georgia Tech not being in the SEC can be traced back to bad blood between Alabama and Georgia Tech, or more specifically between Pepper Rodgers and Bear Bryant.”
That was actually Bobby Dodd. He was a guy that unless you were a Tech fan you didn’t like. He stopped beating Bama when Bryant came along and left in a huff like a 4 year old. Dodd also told LSU that he would not ever bring tech to Baton Rouge and to my knowledge didn’t. Bama played tech yearly up until 85 or so and auburn up until 88 and decided to end both. There has always been a pattern of tech running from competition.

Atlanta wasn’t a third world shithole in those days either

I want Geo Tech back in the SEC. Georgia is too big not to have some in-state competition.
Georgia and Georgia Tech play each other every single year.
Just like Florida and Florida State play each other every year.
Just like South Carolina and Clemson play each other every year.
Simply adding Georgia Tech to the SEC won't change the reality that Georgia has dominated the series in recent years.

Yep, early 60s but Dodd insisted the only reason he left the SEC was due to the "140 Rule", which allowed colleges to over-recruit. Tech President Edwin Harrison was as big of an opponent, if not bigger than Dodd. They both drove the decision to withdraw. Unfortunately, the idea to become the "Notre Dame of the South" did not go as planned.

They are a great example of a program choosing education over athletics.

Dodd and Bryant were friends for many years. What you describe can be considered one view. Most recognize Dodd and Bryant had a falling out over each of their judgment on how to discipline their football players. That seems to be a topic still common today on this board.

Why did they leave?
Same reason all of us should have left. Thought the league gave Alabama preferential treatment.

Here's another one:
Tech hasn't been in the SEC in 60 years, and they are still 4th all-time in win percentage behind Bama, Tenn, and UGA.

Because Bobby Dodd was a snob.

To a lesser degree, I often wonder what might’ve been for Wash U STL had they remained in D1. Weeb Ewbank, the winning HC of Super Bowl III, had them on track to surpassing Mizzou. They have the cash to move to the FCS or G5 if they wanted too.
For those who don’t know, they were the charter members of the Big 8.

Thats not factual-
Oct. 14, 1950 Georgia Tech def. LSU, 13-0 at Baton Rouge
Oct. 13, 1951 #8 Georgia Tech def. LSU, 25-7 at Atlanta
Oct. 16, 1954 Georgia Tech def. LSU, 30-20 at Atlanta
Oct. 8, 1955 #4 Georgia Tech def. LSU, 7-0 at Baton Rouge
Oct. 13, 1956 #3 Georgia Tech def. LSU, 39-7 at Atlanta
Oct, 12, 1957 LSU def. #17 Georgia Tech, 20-13 at Baton Rouge
Oct. 8, 1960 Georgia Tech def. LSU, 6-2 at Atlanta
Oct. 7, 1961 LSU def. #3 Georgia Tech, 10-0 at Baton Rouge
Oct. 6, 1962 LSU def. #5 Georgia Tech, 10-7 at Atlanta
Oct. 5, 1963 LSU def. #7 Georgia Tech, 7-6 at Baton Rouge

“Dodd wanted the SEC to limit the amount of scholarships to about 32 per year, which would keep the other schools from offering 45 scholarships, picking the best, and withdrawing scholarships from the rest. A vote was to be taken by the presidents of the colleges on the issue, and Dodd made it clear that Tech would leave the SEC unless the rule was changed. Bear had promised Dodd he would get his president to vote for Dodd's position, which would have changed the rule; when the meeting was held on January 24, 1964, the Alabama president voted against Dodd's position and the 140 Rule was upheld when the presidents split 6–6. Tech's president immediately walked to the podium and announced Tech was withdrawing from the SEC.”

Maybe more of an egomaniac? Great coach- terrible AD. I really do believe he wanted what was best for student athletes but He should never have let his emotions influence the decision to pull us out of the SEC.

Interestingly, Coach Bryant was absent from the meeting. Stories and rumors still abound (some of which which include a then newly elected, fiery governor). The relationship of those three is probably worth a book of its own.
