2001 Miami Hurricanes had Clinton Portis, Frank Gore and Willis Mcgahee. That’s three NFL pro bowl caliber RBs.

I would argue that Douglas was pretty damn good for a 5th string white RB

That's fine, but you are arguing him as a positive part of the greatest backfield ever. Lots of great backfields have had better 5th backs than Brenden Douglass

The challenge for many fans is when a tailback does something very well but still isn't a complete back. We see the flashes of great, and have to remember how that player limits the playcalling.

Douglas looks like a beast when he turns an inside run to the outside (downhill defenders aren't getting a good angle at him, dbs are getting crushed by his low center of gravity and low pad level).

That same play which doesn't bounce outside sucks. 3 yards with a hole. Maybe 1 without it. And Douglas was not a perimeter runner. And he wasn't a 3rd down or goaline back.

He would look solid on 1st down when the defense is respecting a 50/50 playcall. He could March you down the field. But once you are in the redzone, the offense would Peter out. And that is against your average college defense.

Washaun Ealey looked like Knowshon Moreno on the toss sweep. Most other plays were average to below average.
Caleb King looked strong up the middle. But he lacked the speed to be a perimeter back (i.e. toss sweep).

Believe it or not, JJ Green was an effective goalline back. He was small enough, elusive enough, and patient enough to find the smallest cracks and to penetrate into the end zone for a yard or 2. But that inside run on first down would only get you a yard or 2.

That is where UGA was spoiled with Gurley, Chubb and Sony. All could run inside and outside effectively. All could make a man miss in the backfield and get up field for a positive gain.

But we can't confuse those other backs who do 1 thing great with greatness.

Not bad but Marcus Allen and Charles White on the same team is more impressive. Both won the Heisman. Eric Dickerson and Craig James are better as a duo than any two you could pull off your list. Barry and Thomas as others have mentioned would also trump any two you could name.

You left Jalston Fowler off of the list.

Gurley and Ingram were on a similar level in college, not one name in the OP belongs in the same sentence as Richardson and Lacy.

*inbefore we are talking college not NFL.

Hahahah Gurley ran for more yards than Ingram and it would have been a landslide had Gurley not been hurt. Gurley was way more talented.

Chubb is better than either Lacy or Richardson.

I'm really glad Bobo decided to not give it to any of them on this play.

Were Kenny Irons and Brad Lester on that roster as well?

I can't remember exactly what year Kenny transferred but I think it was 2004. Lester was a year behind him if I remember correctly.

Gurley had a few less yards but did have a higher YPC. On the other hand Ingram faced stiffer competition as did Richardson and Lacy. Since 2013 the East has ranged from one of the worst to the worst division in college football so yeah really good backs are going to amass huge amounts of yardage.

We all see things differently. I meant no disrespect as Gurley and Ingram were great college backs , personally I just don’t see either on the same level as level as Richardson/Lacy. (For reference Henry had the best season on any Bama back but wouldn’t put him in their class either).

William Andrews
Joe Cribbs
James Brooks

All three were all pro and played in same backfield. Great offenses but AU had no defense. Starting a string of epic backfields for AU.

1982-1983
Jackson
Agee
James

1984-85
Jackson
Fullwood
Agee...

Deon Sanders said the Jackson and Fullwood combination was the best in NCAA history.

When was Rudy Johnson at AU? Did he overlap with some of the greats?

Alltime, USC. No question about it. Oklahoma and Texas are up there too.

End of story. Arguably two of the top 10 backs in the history of the NFL trump any backfield

I still think McFadden, Felix Jones, and Peyton Hillis for Arkansas in 06-07 was the best backfield I've ever watched play. Those guys were awesome to watch

Some other great groups

Tenn - Jamal Lewis, Travis Henry, Travis Stephens
Oklahoma State - Barry Sanders and Thurman Thomas(damn)
SMU - Eric Dickerson and Craig James
Miami - Gore, Mcgahee, Portis
Arkansas - Mcfadden, Jones, that one hit wonder white boy
Texas- Ricky Williams, Priest Holmes, Cedric Benson
Auburn - Brown and Williams

Alabama had a pretty good one in 2013 as well but forgot the entire group so won't put it
