He said the big stage and referenced Nebraska too. Said UT already had Kiffin hired which was true. Our then-AD had the nuts to interview more than one AFTER he'd hired LK.

Part II of that story: Patterson was Hamilton's first phone call after Lane left. Patterson told him to frick off. We wound up with Derek Dooley instead

Anyone else think Gary Patterson looks like Larry Culpepper's brother?

Patterson would have been great at Nebraska. A truly great fit. Hard to believe that Osborne chose Pelini over Patterson.

So Tennessee thought Patterson couldn't handle the big stage, so they hired.......Lane Kiffin?

And proof that without a competent AD, you have no future. It starts at the top.

I used this analogy in another thread but it’s worth repeating. Hiring Kiffin is the equivalent of knowingly fricking someone with AIDS. That was their downfall.

Ouch. That brings up one of those “what could have been” thoughts huh vols?

Reminds me of the rumors that Jimbo Fisher was open to the MSU job before the Croomster was hired.

It really goes to show you that so many people in these high positions only get there because of who they know, not what they know. The average football fan could make better decisions.

Pretty interesting comments from Patterson. I had always been under the impression he wouldn't even entertain offers from other schools.

UT passed on Patterson to hire Kiffen, an immature brat who had already proven he couldn't handle a major HC gig.

eh, him not being able to work with Al Davis in the shitshow that was the Raiders wasn't exactly proof he couldn't handle a college HC gig. Hindsight is 20/20 but I don't think Kiffin, at the time, was a bad hire. Dooley, however, was laughably pathetic.

Auburn passed on him when they hired Chizik. The knock on him is he doesn't interview well, but he can coach.
