Why do you just assume Gay was at fault here?
Wasn't he one of the academic cheaters? Why is he still a "student" at state? Hope he comes back next year so he and Duck Dynasty can hug it out.

Anyone know what the fight was about?

All I know is, if you want to read more about the fight, DO NOT google Gay Beard Fight, or any derivative thereof.
I don't know if Gay is suspended or not, but this season Moorhead did not announce suspensions until just before the game. That policy was not limited to the tutorgate 10.

There was video of him practicing circulating yesterday

Shrader has an orbital fracture received in a fight with teammate Willie Gay post practice last week. Tommy Stevens will start at QB in his place.
How is this not a national news story?

And didn't have a single incident while on campus. RehabU.

It ran on ESPN's bottom line ticker through every game last night. That's as national as it gets.

maybe it isn't that big of a deal? Sure state fans are freaking out but our internet fanbase is stupid and more irrational than a 12 year old girl going through her first breakup. They need their asswhipped by Willie too.
I guess i'm partly to blame for pumping up our team so much, but I knew how unrealistic my expectations were.

Nailed it. We really are the worst. It's freaking embarrassing.
MSU's internet fanbase is so terrible that I'm starting to believe that they may actually be detrimental to the school's performance on the field. I never would have imagined, but they are just that awful

If it was week 3 of the regular season then it would be a bigger talking point. There's just a lot going on with the playoff games this weekend, bowl games going on, recent early signing day, new faces in new places, etc...

A couple of reasons.
1. The story is young.
2. The media members that cover MSU are not digging out of fear of losing access.
3. Frankly, it’s not really a nationally relevant story. A few more details could emerge to push it that way but with the NFL playoff picture, NBA heating up, and more relevant bowl games, I don’t think anyone outside of the SEC are interested in MSU.

I think it’s a perfectly reasonable thing to be freaking out a bit. If my LB broke my QBs orbital bone, I’d be extremely concerned about the state of my team.

They've gone waaaaay beyond that.
The fracture is a concern to me but the fight isn't. They happen. All the time. In every program.
I'm more concerned by the fact that our HC can't control the narrative coming from his own players, tbh.

I remember some state fans that were supremely confident that it would Matt Corral in this situation. Crazy times.

Getting caught in the heat of the moment during practice happens, sure. This is bizarre. Mostly due to the lack of information in my opinion. Gay is actively defending himself from random fans on twitter, which he wouldn’t have to do if they would just say what happened. From the outside looking in, it’s completely bizarre.

OM doesn't have a LB that could whip Matt Corral

More HC ineptitude, imho

Everything points back to Moorhead. The fight, the result of the fight, how it was handled, the response to it, and the open-ended freak outs on twitter.
These guys were chippy with each other all year and nothing was done about it. Things were allowed to escalate to the point that your starting QB gets knocked out of the bowl game, literally. Water toters in the media call it a dust-up and nothing more to try and cover it up. Moorhead won't say anything more than "Shrader is doubtful for the bowl game with an upper body injury." Players are all over twitter arguing with fans.
The Mississippi State football program has no discipline because it has no leadership. And it's gonna get worse before it gets better.
