I wouldn’t count Miss. St. even though we played them every year. Auburn’s series with Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Georgia Tech and Tennessee were most certainly heated rivalries. Their fanbases would agree.

If you thought losing Tennessee was bad just wait until Sankey is done.

We will be playing SEC opponent West Virginia over all rivals before too long.

Eh, that has as much to do with cheap 70" tv's than anything. Gas prices probably weren't helping, among other things.

We started playing LSU every year about the time we stopped playing Tennessee. And they’ve even taken that away from us. We had some epic battles with LSU. frick the SEC.

So, Alabama got Tennessee and we got Georgia. Lucky Alabama. Georgia is much tougher than Tennessee.

A lot of older VOLS would put Auburn right up there with Alabama. “We don’t give a damn about the WHOLE state of Alabama”

Hate that the matchup has basically disappeared since the ‘92 expansion.

Auburn-Tennessee was a big rivalry? I'm not old enough to remember that, but I'll take your word for it.

1971: Sullivan leads an 80+yard drive to score a TD and give Auburn a 10-9 win.

1972: The Amazins best UT 10-6 in Birmingham.

1980: UT wins at AU 42-0 which probably got Par Dye to Auburn.

1981: UT wins a close one at home, 14-12 I think. Dye gives the “lay your guys on the line” speech.

1985: AU ranked #1, they kick our arse.

Strangely AU played Tennessee in like 1937/38. General Nathan’s said to “never schedule Auburn again.”

In the early 1950s Neyland had a heart attack and somehow Auburn got Tennessee to sign on for an annual game. They killed us in 1956, but AU won in 1957 and then in 1958 AU put on a defensive show when UT finished with negative yards and no first downs.

It was a huge rivalry.

Unless the SEC goes to a 9 game conference schedule, it looks to me as if two of these three games end being on the schedule every year; Auburn V Georgia, Auburn v Alabama, Tennessee v Alabama.

9 game conference schedule with 3 locked opponents. Other 6 teams rotate. Guaranteed to play everyone in the league every 2 years and @ their venue every 4.

Could even do it with an 8 game schedule and do 3/5 or 4/4. Would just be every 3 years to play everyone.

Auburn gets Georgia, Alabama, and Miss St/Tenn/Fla

Alabama gets Auburn, Tenn, and LSU

Tenn gets Vandy, Alabama and Ga/Fla/Auburn

LSU gets Ole Miss, Alabama, Arky

Arky gets LSU, Aggie, Mizzou

Mizzou gets Arky, OU, South Caro

Texas gets OU, Aggie, Arky

OU gets Texas, Mizzou, Aggie

Aggie gets Texas, OU, Arky

Etc

It was very much a rivalry.

We opened with UT. Georgia Tech was later. Then Auburn ended the season with "Amen Corner"..............UF, UGA, and bama. Those five are all of Auburn's "natural rivals".

It’s what happens when you play the same teams consistently for 60+ seasons, without changing conferences every few decades.

1989 Tennessee-Auburn game will always be Johnny Majors' best win, in my opinion. Classic 80s football, 2 legendary coaches, and both SEC winners.

I was at that game, and the weather played a huge difference in that outcome . It was miserable, wet day … never stopped raining all day long.

Majors made a very smart pregame coaching decision. He practiced the team at Neyland - in the rain, all week - rather than using the regular practice fields. Back then, the field at Neyland was heavily crowned so the field was considerably sloped between center and sidelines …. very slippery in the rain.

Over and over Auburn ran their bread and butter outside sweep …. and down goes the RB on the cut upfield.

Meanwhile, Cobb and Tennessee had dialed in the right shoes all week long …. and it was the edge that Majors needed. Great move. Cobb killed us that day.

Auburn’s rivalry with Tennessee that ended after 1991 to make room for SEC expansion

I had 50 yard line seats for that game (UT won 30-21) that had a face value of $18

They said scalpers were still getting $75 each halfway through the first quarter.

That was before stadium expansion and UT broke the Neyland record that day with 97,731.

Auburns 2nd most played oppoenent Mississippi State ended last year as well. We lost Alabama, LSU. And Auburn 3 of the longest played rivalries in the SEC last year. Tradition is dying. We evolved from playing games that matter to actual fans to prioritizing TV Fans. Its why attendance goin down. We care more about Playin Alabama Auburn LSU Ole Miss, than Texas, A&M, missouri, or SC. It is what it is. Arkansas has become a fine series for us tho ill say that. If Tennessee were closer to Memphis we probably could've had a thing with them too. Vanderbilt probably should be a thing for us but we never play them.

The stand alone value and tradition of the games is what means most to me. I’d be a miserable SOB if it was just about championships
