A shame Johnson isn't a better recruiter, because if he could consistently recruit qb's who could actually, you know, pass they would be a lot tougher on offense.

is he really a bad recruiter or is it that offense that's holding him back?

kids above all that are top recruits don't care about CFB success they just wanna make it to the pros.

Whens the last time an Option based QB made it to the pros as a QB?
And I'm not talking HUNH Spread Option like Meyer.
I'm talking GT or Nebraska Days.

I remember Eric Crouch was deadly in his heisman days at Nebraska. Didn't even get a sniff as a QB in the NFL and tried to catch on as a Safety, which didn't last long.

His rigid offensive philosophy is affecting his recruiting.

And the Alabama fans followed suit, stating Nick Saban would never run a HUNH concept mixed with principles of gimmick offenses?

I remember.

I also seem to remember Alabama fans warning other rival fans what would happen if Saban decided to pivot and join the crowd of coaches running the HUNH spread. None of us liked it because we were fans of traditional, smash mouth football. Most of us, including myself, still are fans of the more traditional styles of offense.

I miss real football, the big hits, physical play.. the importance of defense.. scores that weren't basketball scores. When it actually meant something to score a touchdown.. now if you aren't leaving the game with 5TDs then you aren't trying.

It's just really boring now and I watch far less of it today then I use to.

Six years ago, Saban complained about the spread offense beginning to inundate college football. Now his offenses are scoring nearly 57 points a game with that same offense.

So, he abandoned his deeply felt principles and went along with the crowd? Sad.

Football is an ever evolving game. There was a time that there was no such thing as the forward pass. Coaches who failed to abandon their deeply held principles in those days were left in the dust, just like they are now.

An elite level coach is elite because he's willing abandon his deeply felt principles as it relates to an ever evolving game.

Other coaches are more rigid, reluctant to change, too slow to evolve and unable to adjust. Instead they force their philosophy even when it's no longer effective or when the players they recruit can't execute the plan. Often times, these coaches are stubborn to the point where they will run the same play over and over and over and over again sometimes in the same game. Or they'll use the same route pattern they run year after year after year.

Is this what we want football to be?

Personally, I consider schematic uniformity the biggest danger to the game. With that principle idea in mind, since 2012, I've noticed:

* BigXII is still offense leaning, SEC and B1G run more than other conferences => conferences are still keeping their identities. This is what I want football to be.

* RPO became mainstream => bigger playbooks. This is what I want football to be.

* RPO became mainstream => spotty rule enforcement. This is not what I want football to be.

* GT and service academies still running the triple option => schematic variety and specialization being maintained. This is what I want football to be.

* Fullbacks becoming scarce, shotgun taking over => This is not what I want football to be.

In my opinion, college football is continuing to evolve into an even more enjoyable game to watch.

Yeah, this is what I don't like. In the NFL if the offensive lineman is more than a yard downfield on a non-screen pass play, then it's ineligible receiver downfield and they pretty much enforce it...

In college, they have to be more than three yards downfield and it's not enforced nearly so well...one of the keys the defense reads on a developing play is the position of the OL. Was watching a game this weekend where the announcers pointed out there were offensive linemen 5 yards beyond the LOS and on an RPO pass play and no flag was thrown...makes it even tougher to defend...

I saw this too. Wish College would adapt the NFL rule as well. It would swing the favor back to the defense for a change.

I doubt it will happen, simply based on money. College as a whole has struggled the past decade with AIS (arse in seats) at the games. Fun to watch offense and points on the board are the name of the game. Nowadays if people want to watch some kind of low scoring affair with very little action, they will watch soccer.

You can run whatever kind of offense you want when your third stringers are more talented than 80% of most other teams starters.
