The officials can't see that yellow line. The line judge and the head linesman mark the point where they think the ball reached and the ball is placed there. The officials then determine if a first down was achieved based on the sideline marker.

Yes, right, but the point was he was across the line when his knee or body hit. So regardless of reaching the ball out he had the first down. And we know that based on the marker being at the 12 and the ball as he hit being at or past the 12.

good example: a receiver catches a ball just past the 1st down marker, but tries to juke a tackler and is tackled behind the marker....same thing...no 1st down.
