why would he leave A&M for USCe? they gonna pony up for a fricking swagcopter? unless there is some rift with the power brokers I cant see a single logical reason he would leave A&M at all. I could possibly understand USCw making him blink but even then I doubt he'd consider it very long.

Sumlin was USC's (Trojans) primary target last time. He turned them down. The only threat of Sumlin leaving is to the NFL
You mean like Saban turned down Bama the first 5 times?

Saban didn't leave LSU for Bama. Saban left LSU for the NFL. So yes, like how Saban turned down Bama the first 5 times, I am only worried about Sumlin going to the pros.

This.

USA Today. Interview with Pat Haden. Dec 13, 2013
Pay Haden said Sark was the only one offered the job. Never seen a link attributed to Kevin Sumlin where he said he was offered the job.
The REASON is because Sumlin was never offered the job. The noise you heard were boosters planting stories and nothing more. If Sumlin had been offered he was gone. That's how you know he wasn't offered it.
I hope he stays and think he will. Not even sure USC will offer him.

We are delighted to welcome Steve Sarkisian back to the Trojan family," USC athletics director Pat Haden said. "We conducted a very exhaustive and thorough search, pinpointing about 20 candidates and interviewing five of them. We kept coming back to Sark. He is the only one who was offered the job. I believe in my gut that he is the right coach for USC at this time.

With all due respect, I don't think you know how this works.

USC needs a disciplined, defensive minded coach. Whittingham is the perfect coach for what they need to do.

I am curious to see how much the Aggies are willing to pay Sumelin to keep him. I'll bet it's a lot.

Agreed.
No Athletic Director is ever going to come out and say their eventual hire was anything but their first choice. It's like horns claiming that Strong was the first choice for UTx.
You reach out to your top target to gauge interest. If that interest is reciprocated, you continue negotiations. If, instead, your top target signs a huge extension with his current school, you continue down your list until you find someone with whom you come to an informal agreement. Then the formal offer is made, and you have your "first choice" candidate.

Any head coach who is not at least willing to consider other offers this early in their careers, is doing themselves a disservice. I think he will listen, but I don't think it goes very far.
If he does jump ship, Chad Morris will be our new head coach.

You are probably right. I don't understand the hiring process or how stories get in the media. Sumlin was definitely offered the job and turned them down. Sark was always Haden's second choice. That makes the most sense.
There is no logical reason Sumlin would have considered leaving A&M for USC. I think I understand now.

I can see him considering a move from A&M one day but not for SC. Its at lateral move at best. The most attractive thing about it is 8 to 9 wins a year there will keep you employed for life. He's pretty much got the same deal at A&M.

You'd have to be drunk to jump into that mess Carroll left. But now the job is on even footing with everyone else.

SC has always meant the Trojans.

As far as winning tradition needless to say A&M is more comparable to Southern Miss, than to USC ….but having said that A&M is a better gig. I doubt there is significant difference in $s, you get extensions for not doing anything of substance instead of getting canned left and right, and though not as big a national name… any fan base in the SEC is better than USC's, most home games are half full if that. No real passion.
