USC is like LSU in being the only SEC school located in a urban capital city (not counting Vandy). however, USC was started by the legislature in 1801 to be a leadership college which is why the USC campus is in the middle of the city adjacent to the Capital campus. it didn't have enough for a football stadium and back then, the football games were tied to the state fair. LSU wasn't in Baton Rouge until 1925, when leaders would have had a much better understanding of where to locate the campus.
i prefer on-campus stadiums, but we've been able to be creative w/ our situation to have a good fan experience, but maybe not for visiting fans that don't have connections. we were building tailgating parking condos for 20+ years, which provide venues for bands, bathrooms, etc. and a lot has changed since LSU last came to town. the fairgrounds have been paved and landscaped, and by the time LSU returns, the parking adjacent to the stadium will be replaced by grass and a new parking complex complete at the Old Farmers Market, which will include an amphitheater.
i'm not sure what this will bring for a visiting fan, so I understand Charleston may be more accommodating. i live on the coast just north of Charleston. i've been to LSU twice and both times we've commuted from NOLA. and it was nothing against Baton Rouge, it's just NOLA is a great attraction.
Favorite Trip = UGA (EAST), LSU w/ NOLA (WEST)
Worst = Vandy (EAST), MSU (WEST)

Yeah I don't think many SC fans will argue with the appeal of Charleston, its a beautiful city and for anyone interested in history that place is a gold mine.
With that said Columbia has its appeal with a decent bar scene for college kids and older folks.

Ive been to Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, Vanderbilt, MSU, LSU, and Ole Miss all during undergrad.
My favorite trip, by far, was LSU. Maybe it's because my sisters go there and so we already had a good place to tailgate, tons of girls around, etc. But the atmosphere was awesome.
Can't wait for LSU to travel up for the Neyland night game. I walked through the courtyard at LSU (no idea what its called) and there must have been 80+ people yelling tiger bait at me. Most of the fans were really nice but some were incredibly rude. O well, I guess I usually fall into the rude category when I scream at opposing fans walking to Neyland.
8:00pm kickoff, cant wait

I've been to road games at Georgia, Florida, SC and Bama (in B'ham).
I really enjoyed my trips to Athens and Gainesville. Both were fun towns with spirited (in a good way) fans and good atmospheres in the stadium.
Columbia was middle of the road. The stadium was better than I expected, but I didn't like the way it was off-campus. Columbia isn't a college town, so there wasn't the same spirit around town.
Legion Field was a dump in a crappy part of town...went there three times and the games were fun (well, the two we won were fun) but the rest of the trips sucked.
I'd really like to go to pretty much all of the other venues just to have the experience. LSU is at the top of my wish list and Miss State is at the bottom (sorry Miss State fans, feel like y'all get piled on, but Starkville just doesn't have the draw of the other SEC venues).

Charleston is exactly 105 miles from Columbia, straight down I-26.

You input last year about Auburn was great, so if you have any questions about Columbia, hit me up.
I have been everywhere but Arkansas, and I can't say that I have one town that is my favorite. I have enjoyed them all for different reasons, but UGA, Bama, LSU (NOLA one night), and Ole Miss (Memphis one night) were all awesome.

There arent many SEC towns I stay in on road trips. I have only missed about 5 total over the past decade. Most towns have limited hotel options so I stay in the nearest town (Bham, Montgomery, Grenada/Memphis, Atlanta, etc). If I was going to LSU as an opponent fan, I'd stay in New Orleans. To me it makes the trip more fun to see the surrounding area. College towns are great to party in when your 19 but I'm past that.
I've heard Arkansas is a great trip but we only play in Little Rock so it sucks for us.
I don't see how anyone would choose to go to school at Miss St. that isn't from there or have ties to the school.

I <3 charleston
I'd go to CoC if it weren't liberal arts and they had a team there. I guess my annual visits will have to suffice

LSU, the atmosphere is second to none. Every other year when they play Bama in Tuscaloosa I still make a trip to an LSU game. This year I'm going to the Florida game.

CofC is awesome... the women are definitely SEC-caliber. My mom went there and tried to talk my sister or me into attending, but we followed pops and went to USC, mostly because of football. Couldn't imagine college in the fall with no football.

bama and state.
bama the drugs are everywhere and those that go to the school/graduated are the best.
state i have a free place to stay and know some people so it makes the trip more fun than the average trip to starkvegas.
uf is the worst

I really thought about applying but all the reasons youmlisted were enough of a deterrent for me, I applied to 10 schools and every single one had a BCS Team

I like Athens the best, but my trip to Knoxville was the most fun away game I've been to.
Worst: Starkville.
Worst fans, worst town, worst stadium, etc

I've always enjoyed Auburn, but it also helps that we know tons of Auburn fans so we always have a good mixed crowd at the tailgate and it's always a lot of fun.
I also really enjoy Florida.
Least favorite: there is no such thing as a least favorite SEC road trip... all of them are great IMO.
