I was being clocked around 88mph when I was 14-15 as a pitcher at both my HS freshman team and in the summer going to baseball camps like UKs. I was an idiot and decided to give up baseball back then because I was more interested in chasing girls and began playing music (which I still do.) Up to that point Id always been one of those kids who was naturally good at the sport and frankly never had to work very hard. Then all of a sudden it starts getting serious and I was a dipshit kid not willing to put in any work and said to hell with it.
I dont know if I agree with the premise everyone can throw it 90 naturally. You either have an arm or you dont. I did and I know watching the other kids around me a lot of them werent on par.

I couldn't hit 90 if I threw the ball out of a car going 40.

I was a low to mid 80's guy. Brother was clocked at 93 in college.

Around 77 in high school. Never clocked it again.

The quote is kind of true, you must also be willing to put time into the weight room. If he is truly willing to put in the time, you need to look of Dr. Josh Heenan. He has a lot of information out there and how to build you body up to 90 mph. He also believes everyone can throw 90 mph.

I had a friend in middle school who threw a brick thru a window at Tillman’s drugstore. It was clocked at 112 mph.
He gave up his promising career in baseball to become a crack ho.
When he pitched away his life I was sad.

92 in college.
But more importantly as a few have mentioned is movement and location. Look back at the Braves pitching staff that dominated in the 90's. Glavine and Maddox rarely broke 90 but their movement and location were unbelievable.
Now as it relates to your son, if he is not in high school, please, please, PLEASE do not teach him a curveball or slider etc. Have him be able to locate his fastball on the corners...inside and outside...and high and low. Only then should he worry about other pitches. The first one should be a change-up and then be able to locate it just like a fastball. Learn how to mix things up, set up pitches, read a players weaknesses from their swing (ie what pitches they struggle with).

I once threw a pitch that left the ballpark at over 90 MPH. It was impressive.

TILT...
Mid 80’s+ fastball is the new “I only bang 9/10’s”.
Next weeks topic: “What’s your record @ Sonic?”

87-88 in college. I'm sure I probably bumped it a time or two, but I played with several guys that were 94-95.

I threw over 90. I played SS though.
Long toss, long toss, long toss.(not cutting it loose just tossing it at farther distances) That will help strengthen his arm. Work on his leg strength.
If he is young (little league age) do not let him throw breaking balls. I can't stress this enough. Just work on spotting the fastball. Work on control and not trying to overthrow. I played with guys who could throw it through a cinder block wall, but they never advanced because they had no idea where it was going.

Can't preach this enough. My fastball went from 82-83 to 86-87 my senior year of high school on a long toss program.

No but I did bat against a guy that threw 90 plus in highschool. I never felt so overmatched playing baseball in my life. I was a sophmore at the time.

80 was mine, but I was a catcher.
