Yes, they did.

2004 vs Utah was so disappointing at the time. Turned out they would go 13-0 and their coach would be hired by Florida.

That 04 Utah Team was probably one of the best non-p5/non-BCS teams of all time. Loaded with talent. I believe they also kicked Arizona's arse and also beat the shite out of Pitt in the Fiesta bowl. Not great teams, but still fairly impressive at that time

And that was with making a pretty crazy comeback in that game. Also, IIRC we got screwed on a bad call in the Citadel game.

I was a grad student at the time at southern and some fellow students wanted to go. I expected to get our arse kicked. It was weird being there as a GSU fan and not an LSU fan because the gator fans were nice to us that day.

Anyway, we didn’t complete a pass.

If I remember correctly that Georgia Southern team was not even very good were they (compared to previous Southern teams)?

Well, I wasn't going to point this out but then this post came up, so...

LSU has a more recent G5 loss than Tennessee, Mississippi State and Kentucky.

tDecline.

Truthfully LSU Non-P5 record is stellar....I think Troy finished that year rank.

Those UAB teams during that time period were good also in early 2000s. I remember them playing FSU tough or might have beaten them.

You’d be right, we went 7-4 in the Southern Conference. In fairness Jeff Monken was a great coach and we won the Sunbelt the next year in our first year in D1.

We brought UGA to OT in 2015 and that one hurt because we had a chance to win.

That’s when I was sure the Bama of old was finally dead. Under Bryant, you had games like that almost every season but you always managed to find a way to win late. When you couldn’t come back against the likes of NIU I was sure the dreaded Tide Dynasty was over at last.

Then you hired Saban.

Interesting topic.

As for Alabama's loss to Utah in the 2009 Sugar Bowl, a lot of people gave Alabama fans hell over that one but that Utah team was arguably the greatest non-power 5 team ever. The 2017 UCF team is the only other non-power team close to that Utah team. I think Utah (and I could be wrong) finished that 2008 season ranked #2 in either the final AP or Coaches poll.

Not here making any excuses for the losses.

Our losses to BG were straight beatdowns, and Urban Meyer was their coach then. Pinkel was rebuilding the program. The Troy and New Mexico losses were some of the worst losses ever. We were ranked when we lost to Troy and our season spiraled. The New Mexico loss was just weird, and that was Brad Smith's last season. Pinkel was on the hot seat, and the Independence Bowl that comeback saved his job.

The Navy game was known that the entire team didn't want to play in that game.

MTSU was homecoming in Odom's first season. We obviously sucked but this didn't help his cause winning over the fan base.

The loss to Wyoming was the realization that it wasn't gonna work with Odom as the head coach. Ranking the losses considering where we were at as a program starting with the worst loss:

New Mexico
Wyoming
Troy
MTSU
Bowling Green x2
Navy

Southern Miss beat a lot of top programs in the late 80s through the early 2000s.

1989 they beat #6 Florida State 30-26.
1990 they beat #13 Alabama 27-24 and and #15 Auburn 13-12.
1991 they beat #16 Auburn 10-9.
1994 they beat LSU 20-18.
1996 they beat Georgia 11-7.
And, as someone mentioned earlier, they beat Alabama 21-0 in 2000.

They were really a menace to SEC teams (and Florida State) in the 1990s.
