I'm not doubting that.

I'm glad they are, or I wouldn't have the job.
Look, I'm not saying these guys aren't compensated pretty well for what they do. I'm certainly not calling for kids to be payed "market" prices for their job either. That would be a shitshow of corruption. I do think though that if your signature is worth something, you should get a cut. If you sell a bunch of jerseys, you should get a cut. It doesn't even have to be while in school, they can get it when they leave.
It's going to happen eventually.

which would open up a can of worms. How would you feel if you lost out on players because a coach at another school tells them they sell more merchandise, so they will be able to get more money

I see you've got this under control, Duke. I'm out.

How much are you worth to your current employer?
Dunno, probably about what they pay me.

I know. Is that can any worse than the current system of boosters lavishing kids with gifts and straight money?

Probably about the same as when I lose a kid to Saban because my program can't afford to give him a $30k car.
These kids are already being paid. I want it to be more transparent.

I'm honestly probably worth more than my pay, but it's a short term gig. I can't really see the value I've added until I'm past gone.

Exactly. These athletes also dont have to take out student loans like a normal citizen and begin their career in debt.
They are not normal. They are exceptional, and they benefit the school in a variety of ways. Those on academic scholarships are exceptional as well. They don't graduate with debt. No one said, "No Zuckerberg, you can't develop facebook and get paid for it until you graduate." If other people on scholarship can benefit from their talent and name, then so should athletes.

Let them start their own league if they don't think a college education is payment enough.

You folks wanting to pay college athletes would open a Pandora that would never close and destroy the things we enjoy. I could see giving the athletes a bit more spending money but it has to be even across the board.

Do research students get to keep the endowment money they generate for the schools?

No, but if an invention is licensed or patented and developed they can receive up to a third of the revenue generated.
And guess what! They get to use university facilities, live in University housing, eat lunch in the dining hall to do it. Why do they get to do this and profit? Because the University makes a shite ton of money off these big brains.

If not for the school allowing them to showcase their talent no one would know who they are. They receive plenty in return for their atheletic efforts. They can get the free education, room and board and all that goes with it plus the stage to show the world what they can do and make millions...

How is that any different from academic scholarships? School makes money off both, and if you are big research University (think like an SEC school for football) you make as much or more than a football program. Think Harvard is really concerned about how much their football team brings in?
Why the double standard? Is it because we view them as just a bunch of thugs and gorillas who are lucky to have the opportunity to perform for our pleasure? They should be thankful we let them lift weights in our nice, clean training facilities?
The University does not own your body or mind.
Don't enforce a double standard.

Please explain to us how we're going to do this and still pay everyone equally - and, observing Title IX, this includes the women's sports.
Once you let that sink in, get back to us.

Here's a better idea for people like you. Nobody is twisting their damn arm to go to college. Full scholarship... What's that worth? Sports do not last a lifetime. They will still have to work at something. Not no but hell no they should not get paid.

Sounds like you need to have your admissions office learn about Pell grants.
