I agree.

Most have said the portal's unrestricted nature was going to hurt. Alabama didn't benefit from the portal nearly as much as some other places, but it's true we've had some fans that didn't realize the problem until it became our problem too.

OTOH, just because it takes something like this to realize it doesn't change the fact that it's not good for football. I mean we had a kid transfer out and before even playing a snap at his new school is transferring again (IIRC).

From an article in Mississippi Today ( LINK)

quote:

I was talking the other day with a wealthy fan of one of our Mississippi universities. He has done really well financially and has always supported his school’s teams and facilities, donating significantly. But he has drawn a line where the NIL is concerned. This is what he told me: “I am not about to donate tens of thousands of dollars to a collective so our star running back can go out and buy himself a Porsche and then drive it off next year to Tuscaloosa or Baton Rouge for a better deal.”

But it’s happening everywhere. In 2019, 6.5% of all Division I football players had transferred at least once. This past season, more than 20% had. More than 2,100 Division I players have entered the portal this year. That figure will continue to rise. To say it doesn’t always work out for those who enter the portal is an understatement. In 2022, of all the college basketball players who entered the portal, nearly 20% wound up without a college scholarship anywhere.

Sports participation teaches many life lessons, one of which is that perseverance and hard work in the face of disappointment will pay off in the end. The portal teaches the opposite. Used to be that if you were a second teamer and weren’t getting on the field or court as much as you desired, you buckled down and worked harder. Now? “Screw this,” they tell the coach, “I’m going in the portal.”

Screw the players…they want it to be a strictly money deal…then welcome to the business side when mid and upper management gets fired or retires..that’s the basis of the entire NIL problem..17,18, 19 year old kids thinking institutions that have been around for over a century “owes” them.

Alabama fans have been insufferable, entitled douchebags for the last 20 years and deserve everything that happens to them. Everyone outside of the state of Alabama is looking forward to fewer idiotic “roll tides” being yelled at funerals, weddings, and graduations

love how Bama didn't want this rule when they recruited Eli Ricks and Jermaine Burton. Eat it, Tide.

Show me who said that...Bama has lost players before this as well. Just to me there is a problem that Bama can't bring in players till after spring game. Caleb Downs will be able to practice with his new team. Anyone and everyone saw that the portal was a nightmare. We are the first power team to really see the effects of a coaching change....

Just like with all of the rule changes Nick Saban cried for over the years, I guarantee there will be new rules next year re: portal and NIL because of what Bama is going through right now.

There is no fix without some type of intervention by Congress, which is not going to happen anytime soon.

The idea that athletes will become employees and negotiate collective bargaining agreements like pro teams seems pretty far fetched.

First, do you really think Universities that are already strapped for case are going to agree to take on the long term burden of paying several hundred athletes? Does an athletes time as an "employee" count for calculating state retirement benefits? How do the various State laws dealing with government employment and government contracting apply to athlete "employment"?

Also, how does title IX play in this space? Does the university have to pay the bullpen catcher on the softball team the same as the starting QB? Are there different unions for every sport or does one union represent both the swim team and the football team?

Contracts and collective bargaining will be the only way to stem the flow.

I remember being so against NIL with no real parameters or direction and told I was just jealous teenagers would be making money. lol

I said it’s a slippery slope and will ruin the game as we know it, and told I was wrong.

That’s fine. I’m sure Alabama will go after Michigan, Arizona and Washington players…. My point is that it is destroying college football.

Exactly. All the people laughing it up right now... your day will eventually come. It is just the visible topic of the day right now with Alabama, but no college team is immune 100%.

Quit being a bitch. We sat and watched Bama get passes for 17 years both on and off the field (if you were a man you'd admit the Patrick Peterson INT was rigged and refs cheat) but we stuck through it. Let me guess, you're a New England fan that has recently decided to stop watching the NFL?

That doesn't sound right.

Do you have a link?
What was even the basis for a ruling like that?

I've been saying this for several years now.

Mandatory redshirt unless the student has the diploma.
Unlimited transfers once the student has the diploma.

Put the student back into student athlete.

There is no need for immediate playing time for undergrads.

It doesn't make sense to have this option in place when it serves no purpose for the sport.

Yalls legendary coach retired. Obviously some players who didn’t see that coming are leaving. The transfer portal and the enforcement of NIL coinciding with your legendary coach’s retirement aren’t boding well for Bama at this current time. Suck it up and deal with it. Don’t tell the entire world it needs to change because the run is over. Bama fans at portal rn:

Seems odd that that is your solution. What would history have been like if Jameson Williams or Jahmyer Gibbs had sat out a year? Now y'all want players to sit out a year? Why are Alabama fans so keen on changing the rules now?
