My thoughts on the matter:
A lot of people don't realize it, but Miami was Florida's traditional rival, not FSU--for decades. Then, the FSU-Miami rivalry kind of replaced the UF-Miami rivalry in the 80's and left the Gators on the sidelines. It was only when UF got really good under Spurrier that the UF-FSU "rivalry" got underway, but there is not much tradition behind it.....and I, too, think UF is a little reluctant to put Miami back on the schedule for fear of losing (the same reason Ole Miss dropped Southern Miss many years ago).
As for Ole Miss and Memphis, that was traditionally the "warm-up" game for Ole Miss and then Memphis made it competitive and a lot of Ole Miss fans didn't like that and wanted the game cancelled, so it was. It makes sense to play it, though, because when the game is played in Memphis, there are more Ole Miss fans than Memphis fans in the stadium, so it is more like another home game without actually counting as one.
Ole Miss lost its traditional OOC rival when Arkansas joined the SEC--prior to that, Ole Miss and Arkansas had played on a regular basis. In fact, Ole Miss was just about the only team that ever played Arkansas in the regular season before they joined the SEC.
Vanderbilt should play either Duke or Tulane every year--a no-brainer and I don't understand why they don't.
The SEC added another conference game and no one else was playing 2 strong ooc programs annually. It was a lose/lose situation for us because Florida State was rolling as well. The state legislature probably would've taken action like they almost did back in the 50's.
Edit: It's also worth noting that Miami has declined several meetings in the past that would be in Tampa.

you guys dropped the Miami series a full 5 years prior to the SEC adopting an 8 game conference schedule

The SEC went from 6 to 7 games in 88.

so playing 7 conference games was such a difficulty that you couldn't play Miami?

I thought about it but I wanted to stick with mocking the scheduling philosophy and not go balls to the wall with a GSU joke.
But now that it has been brought up it's a two-fer

Well we aren't used to playing a GA program that knows how to win titles and big games.

It's called switching conferences, idiot.
And I just got through telling you that some of the opponents it would make the most sense to play OOC have been blackballed into not playing us by texas.

Only after y'all talked about UF supposedly never playing anyone (again, despite having played more eos ranked teams than any other program).
