I think you're forgetting what UGA is in basketball.

We're a bottom feeder. In the Tom Crean era, we one more than 15 games once (16 in 2019-2020), and it took Anthony Edwards (#1 overall pick) to manage that.

16 wins with a put together group of nobodies in year 1? We're pretty much cool with that.

Why our basketball team has continued to suck is beyond my comprehension.

No, of course not. Year one and a lot of improvement over last year.
That being said, I kind of wonder now if we should have hired the guy at Kennesaw State. He's got the Owls in the NCAA tournament for the first time ever...and he was an assistant at UGA under Crean.

It seems like Georgia basketball goes 17-15 every season

I wonder what an elite coach would do there.

It hasn't always been that way. Georgia is a proud basketball school ever since Hugh Durham's nobodies in 1983 made the Final Four. And don't forget the Miracle Workers in 1987. And Tubby Ball. Jim Harrick and Mark Fox had some success as well; heck even Dennis Felton made the tourney one year.

Georgia bolloxed everything by dismissing Fox after a so-so season a few years back. No reason do have done that, as Fox always kept the Dawgs competitive. Now you're left with a program with no purpose, no direction...a similar scenario to what LSU now faces with McMahon.

Firing Jim Harrick over stupid shite that every athletic department does is what set them back. Following that up with Dennis Felton (who was a TERRIBLE coach) was even worse. They hired Felton because they knew he'd run a clean program, regardless if the results sucked. Mark Fox was a better coach than Felton but was hired for the same reason. He plateaued at Georgia and it was not going to get better for him.

Crean was a huge whiff, but it also showed that Georgia was going to try and be something other than a doormat in basketball. They spent the money and got a coach with a decent track record. It just didn't work out.

No one will say this out loud, but I believe White was hired to make this job more attractive when it comes open again.

Sincere question VADawg, what does ”make it more attractive [when we let White go]” mean?

Bring some stability to the program and pull it out of the dumpster where Crean buried it. It's awfully hard to hire a good coach at a historically shitty basketball school coming off of a historically shitty season.

Every single take in this post is wrong. Especially the Fox bit. Guy couldn't recruit and was spinning his wheels while he was here. He had NINE seasons at UGA where he did next to nothing and he's been 38-87(!) at Cal since he was let go. Mark Fox is not a good coach.

Do you seriously not know how to spell "loses"? You spelled it the same way 3 times last night. Third grade is hard, I know, but seriously!

Gotcha, makes sense.

In other news, screw Harrick for putting us in a position where we had no choice from a reputational perspective but to let him him go, and in hindsight setting the program back 25 years. (Despite all the recent news and coaching developments, times were actually different then around rule-breaking)

Because UGA's administration has the same philosophy about MBB as LSU's, which is to invest absolutely nothing into it.

Jesus Christ.

He has as many wins this year as Crean had the last 3 years combined.

Are you dumb?

Mike White was ready to go on vacation. Not playing oquendo in the second half at all was inexplicable. He sabotaged the team and was ready for the season to end.

He was a mediocre hire. If he couldnt get it done at Florida he sure as hell isn't gonna get it done at Georgia.

The basketball talent in the ATL is ridiculous. Hell, Wheeler and Norcross could supply Uga for deep runs in the ncaas. Stegman is the worst facility in the sec. Maybe Coleman is worse. Uga has NO history except for Nique and the 83 Vern Fleming squad. I think they won the 91 regular season title with Alec Kessler. But only because Stanley Roberts missed 2 ft’s to ice the game. At least when I geaux to the pmac I can look up in the rafters and see final 4 appearances. And bob Pettit’s jersey. And Shaq’s and pistol. And CJ’s. UGA’s women have more history than their men. Katrina McClain, Teresa Edwards. Gold medalists.
