I blame Stallings (and Barker) for Alabama fans liking McElroy so much. If this was any other fanbase, they would have been much harder on him.

So tell me, who would you have started last year instead? All 6'4" 175 pounds of McCarron, so we all could have seen him get broken in half the first time he got hit? Or would you have preferred to watch Star look completely lost every week?

in the history context of the word romantic... i think bama fans DO have a more romantic view of Stallings and the 92' championship... and even a VS Saban sort of thing. but, is everyone that doesn't have a "Bama connection" gonna be considered a mercenary if they're a good coach?

i mean, at some point you inevitably run out of Bama connection coaching choices.

*edit*

no matter how much of a connection to Bama anyone has for a pedigree, WINNING is more important than any of the other shite.

Sure but if you're comparing the two, I would think a Bama fan would feel more for Stallings because i don't think he ever would have ended up coaching another SEC school regardless of what happened. For example, had he been a little younger and decided he wanted to get back into coaching in 1998 or 1999, I can't see him coaching at LSU or Auburn under any circumstances, because of his loyalty to Alabama.

Obviously Saban has no such loyalties and is in it only for himself.

so, because of what YOU think, we should stick our noses up at Saban who is our current coach because we love a guy that was here more than a decade ago MORE than we love him? should we refuse to accept Saban because he coached at LSU and went to the NFL and then came to Bama? maybe we should respect him more had he never come back to the best conference in college football to coach. i do recall him trying to court LSU before he signed on here, but LSU gave him the finger.

I didn't say any of that, I just said if I were a Bama fan I would like Stallings more because of his loyalty. JMO.

And we didn't give him the finger, but it wouldn't have been right to fire a guy who was 22-4 at the time for no good reason.

Again, I like Stallings. But, some Alabama fans realize and remember that the mid-90s probation was worse than it had to be because Stallings and the admin kind of swept the Langham thing under the rug as in; nothing to see here. Let's move along. We all know how that turned out.

I would have at least given McCarron some snaps during blowouts so he would have been ready to play if McElroy continued to struggle or got injured.

seems like Bama is willing to fire a coach that goes 10-2 a year before we canned him for "no good reason."

i realize what you're saying though... and you're right, at the time it would have been TOTALLY shitty of LSU to do that, but they'd still have been right to.

After the 2006 season though we were ranked #3 in the country, Bama was 6-6 and headed to the Indy Bowl.

Obviously hindsight is 20/20, but the administration just couldn't rationalize throwing Miles out on his arse at that point.

Next to Coach Bryant, Coach Stallings is my favorite Alabama Coach. Going by just in my lifetime, Coach Stallings is my all-time favorite. I have a tremendous amount of respect for the man and for a while was actually hoping he would come back to Alabama(pointless hope, but still )

You would have given a true freshmen some meaningless snaps while the team is winning? I am so glad you aren't our coach.

Bench McElroy is one of those guys who is looking for the next Matt Leinart at Alabama. Alabama has never really had an explosive, game changing quarterback. That's never been our style. Looking back through our history only Harry Gilmer comes to mind as a QB that could really make something happen.

So am I.... You would burn an undersized, green behind the ears freshman QB's redshirt just to get him snaps while the current QB that been in the system years is winning?

This, but bama fans did not appreciate Stallings like they should have when he was there. They bitched about him constantly and eventually ran him off.

I think gumps have learned some lessons from their stupidity the last 25+ years. Maybe.

Fans did not run him off. It was our dumbass AD at the time (can't remember his name). I loved Coach Stallings and still think he's a great man. Yes I complained at times about our offense but he was and still is a winner.

Bama fans ran Curry off but not Stallings.

I cannot remember the exact circumstances that led to Stallings leaving, all I remember is he did not want to leave and Bama fans did bitch about him constantly.

I like Stallings. One of my favorite coaches behind the Almighty Pat Dye. Even read Stallings book Another Season and enjoyed it. Stalling is a hell of a guy.

I never bitched about him. Not one bit. Infact I was very upset when he left.

How can you speak about things that you know nothing about? We didn't build anyone's statue until after the last stadium rennovation when they put up the walk of champions. Get it in your head please. Don't speak for Bama fans, because you don't know anything about how things or why things are done here. If Nick Saban leaves tomorrow, and another coach were to come in and we won the national championship, that coach would also have a statue put up right away.
We don't tell you where or when to put up your toilet paper in the tree, so don't tell us when to put up a statue of our coach. Don't try to tell us how we feel about Coach Stallings, because you have no idea. Ask Coach Stallings how he feels about Alabama, and how he is treated when he returns here. We love and respect Coach Stallings as a coach and as a man.
We loved his son, and have done a lot of things to honor Johnny. So don't speak for Bama fans.

Stallings didn't want to retire but he didn't get along with the AD at the time so he went ahead and retired to spend more time with John Mark. We bitched at times about his offense but he was and will always be loved by Bama fans.

Should be. He was the end of an era of great coaches that were influenced by Bear. Including Pat Dye.
