Does football really belong in college athletics?

I’m confused. Why shouldn’t it be a collegiate sport?

A better Question is do the Olympic Sports belong in College Athletics

They lose TONS of money because the General Public only gives a shyt about those sports once every 4 years, and then to top it off the College Versions of those sports is played at such a low level that many Olympians no longer go the College route to get to the Olympics, at least not as much as they did 50-60 years ago

The truth is, is that every College Sport should be self sufficient and be able to stand on its own financially, just like the Academic Depts

A lot of Colleges have scrapped & dropped majors that were too much of a financial drain on the College, the Athl Depts should cull the herd the same way

No, it doesn't. Hard to admit because I love it. But the game no longer aligns with the mission of higher education -- and in many ways has corrupted that mission.

The starting point should be a simple question: What is the purpose of collegiate athletics?

When football first developed in elite east coast colleges in the late 1800s, that answer was simple and obvious -- athletics and physical fitness were considered essential components of cultivating the "complete man." Math, science, literature, philosophy, history, and athletics. All of these things were connected in 19th century thinking.

Now? Clearly this is not the case. The student--athlete model is a facade for what is really a corporatized farm league populated by athletes who (for the most part) have no true interest in higher education at all. On top of that, the sport does more to harm the brain than it does to cultivate intelligence.

We are approaching the breaking point, to be honest. It is difficult to see from the vantage point of an SEC fan -- obviously the SEC will be the last to give it up.

If college football is really masquerading as a glorified minor league for the NFL, then eventually it will go away. Or at least be highlighted by the FCS model. Those players are probably much closer to the stereotypical depiction of student athlete than any of the big FBS schools represent. But the end is a long way off in my opinion. If anything kills the game, it will be the exorbitant amount of money to subsidize all of those scholarships.
