I had a close family member play at Ouachita. I keep up with them and generally hope they do well. They’ve had some good seasons lately.

They have a really cool rivalry with Henderson state. The schools are separated by a four lane street. They are in the same conference. The road team actually uses their home locker room when they play and walks across the street.

And it’s always been real close. Right now the all time series is 43-43-6. No one has ever had more than a four game lead.

But I wouldn’t cross the street to watch them play now that he has graduated.

If you ever make it up to Amherst for a game you've gotta go to Hangar for some boneless honey mustard chicken wings.

I once went to Legion Field and watched Sothern Miss and a young Bret Favre's beat a good Bama defense. That loss is much easier to accept after watching his nfl career.

Favre was a one of kind talent. When Jim Carmody brought him to a game as a 17 year old Freshman in 1987, I knew he was something special. Those of us fortunate to see him in college already knew he was going to be a great QB in the NFL. It took the rest of the country a while to figure it out as well.

Same with Steve McNair. I knew he was going to be a great NFL QB while he was in college.

Why? Because they each had intangibles that are not teachable. Each did not have a great OL so they learned to improvise in college a great skill that helped carry them in the NFL.

It is one reason often times the best NFL QB’s come from smaller, lesser known schools. The QB’s at the very good colleges often have their weaknesses masked because the rest of the team is great and they don’t have to carry the load. Then they get to the NFL and flop or are very average.

Pitt. I know they're ACC now, but they still feel like minor league because, well, it's Pitt. I've liked them ever since 2007 for obvious reasons. And as a bonus Marino was my favorite pro player as a kid.

My daughter goes to Mississippi College in Clinton, MS. It's fun to keep up with the Choctaws and visit the daughter on a game weekend.
