Do you really think the people who are pushing this stuff care six cacas in Hades what the fans think?

Fewer do each year. The professionalization of college athletics and unrestricted free agent market will hurt the viewership.
One of the AU posters hit the nail on the head. The less concern the players have for the logo on their chests while chasing playing time and $$$, the more college athletics will move away from its base.

Athletics is becoming more akin to the entertainment world. It's putting a square peg in a round hole because competitive sports isn't entertainment. Are any of you entertained when your favorite team loses? I'm not.

Signed, NASCAR.
Years and years ago, before the big "boom," in the press box at Talladega, one of their young whippersnapper marketing people told me that their goal was not to be the top racing series, but to be a co-equal major league sport to the NFL, MLB, the NBA and the NHL.
I thought that was madness then and it's still madness now, but that drives what they're doing and in a way can be tangentially related to what's happening in college sports.
Their deal is they don't think they can achieve that goal with the old-school typical racing fans ... plus there's the "ick" factor they see in catering to the lower- to middle-class rural and small-town and, generally, conservative Southerners and Midwesterners that were traditionally auto racing's core audience ... so they're in a constant battle to entice new people to watch who don't know a lug nut from a hubcap (which is a pipe dream because auto racing is a niche sport), but who are willing to spend money.
Where it applies somewhat to college sports ... and I certainly could be in the ozone, won't be first or last time ... is that it's going to be hard to recoup the investment from the traditional core audience so they're going to start doing screwy things to try to draw in new fans, I'll wager in the 45 and under age group.

This was done by a court in California.
And confirmed in a decision by the U.S. Supreme Court which ain't exactly "liberal." (Preventive strike at Poli Board gunk being brought in.) With lots of congresspeople (including many Republicans, another preventive strike) ready to codify it into law if necessary.
I know it's out of hand, but the people jabbering about what can be done to stop NIL need to get a clue. There's no stopping it because the forces that brought it in aren't from the sports world, they're from real life, and again they don't give six cacas in Hades what the fans think and they don't care that fans believe they should be heard because they pay the bills.

No, we don't. Attendance REALLY matters in college sports. The fans have the power. We just never use it.

You put into words that which has been on my mind for a very long time. The Georgia Bulldogs used to be a part of my heart and soul. Now, not so much. My bowl of soup has increased in size, but only water has been added to keep it full.

Fans have no say
Apathetic fans have no say. If the fans of college sports acted like the soccer hooligans in Europe did after the Super League nonsense was announced then this wouldn't happen. However, at this point (and given the apathetic response of the fan bases), the only thing that will slow this train down is politicians getting involved and nixing it completely.

I think they actually dislike it. They are squeezing what they can and blowing the bubble til it goes boom
You know, as crazy as that may sound on the surface, based on the decisions they're making and their corresponding actions, I can totally believe it.

Not gonna lie, most of the country thinks the SEC has been doing this all along, just under the table. Ergo, some are afraid that if NIL goes away, and they are forced back the way things were, the SEC is going to keep doing it anyway…back to under the table.
I, for one, HATE this NIL crap, super conferences, playoffs, ESPN.

Did you not hear what was coming out of Congress? There were bipartisan demands that players get cut in on the pie. There will be no relief from the politicians.

Btw, Saratoga is a great place to live. Its only problem is snide jackasses like you that slither in during the racing season.

No, we do not. This is a money grab for espn and others, while they destroy college football for us.
Well I am not fan of ESPN, but this is not just about ESPN. Fox is involved with this as well. Fox is driving the Big10 engine because they know that in terms of Media rights, the Big10 is the only brand name conference with fan bases similar to what is found across the SEC footprint to get Top $$$$. The New Big10 Media rights deal is worth and estimated $1.1 Billion.
The SEC is more aligned with ESPN.
This will be like the NFL. AFC is primarily on CBS, NFC is on Fox, with NBC and ESPN getting marquee matchups in prime time on Sunday and Monday.
College football is over as we new it. If is going to be a professionalized model with football teams affiliated/attached to a University. There will be a Commissioner of the Super league, with a Board of Directors type deal akin to the NFL commissioner and Owners running the NFL.

When I lived in Lexington, Va I found that I had just as much fun partying with my old Mercer buds from back home when they came to play VMI as I ever did at Georgia games, and it cost me a whole lot less. I have a hunch that programs like Troy, Mercer, Furman, and Middle Tennessee are going to have expanding fan bases in the near future.

I don’t want it because I don’t like professional sports.

The fukin fans don’t get a vote. They’ve never gotten a vote.

Reminds me of the frenzy that created The Dust Bowl.
Perhaps that can be the super conference title game one day.

Well at least you live in reality, the people who downvoted my post are likely the same type people who think the earth is flat and only 6,000 years old.
The Economics are driving the engine, fans can choose to be fans or choose not to be fans. I was once a fan of the 1980's NBA when Bird and Magic came into the league in 79-80, followed up by Jordan in 84-85 and followed it till Jordan retired. Haven't followed it since Jordan retired and today would not watch it if Lebron James and the Lakers were playing for free at a local HS gym near my house.

For football only, I'd like FSU, Clemson, NC St, and VT. The latter 2 care about football much more than their flagship rivals.
