Yes, the new delivery methods afforded by the internet just led to renegotiations that allowed more profits to be held by ownership. We are at a point where technology seems to rarely makes anything better, it just makes things we must do more expensive or is a method to squeeze labor without any material societal benefit.

Apple is not interested in Disney. That rumor is old as the I-pod.

I just read some article about it in Bloomberg or Wall Street Journal a few weeks ago. There seems to be some smoke because Apple could basically buy Disney with cash on hand and Apple’s streaming service is having trouble breaking through popularly albeit having some critical success.

Disney spinning off or selling their cable/broadcast is widely considered to be the first move they’d make as they pare themselves down into a buyable product so to speak.

I don't think so. Artists used to make $.50 - $1 on each $20 CD sold.

The new delivery methods mean you don't have to produce a physical product, so that $20 goes down to $.50 and the portions haven't changed.

Yeah, we got a fricked up deal and we were kinda forced into with the SECN. We should have kept the CBS deal but with more money, and possibly gotten an additional deal with FOX.

Man people really forget what the climate was like back then. CBS wasn't offering us a deal near what ESPN was. Then the whole thing went nuts.

Their streaming service went from $2B to $8B in 3 years. They're shedding ABC for a reason - traditional cable and television networks are hemorrhaging money.

Actually, the OTA stuff is still profitable. Only one major streaming service makes a no-shell games profit, and that's Netflix. The rest are bleeding cash at unsustainable rates. Consolidation is the only viable option, but won't be good for either consumers or contracted content providers like the SEC.

The SEC football contract will have a change of control clause in it for sure. That will be how they renegotiate the contract, or at least try to. Hard to see what competitor would want to go after the contract to give leverage. Meanwhile, Tim Cook is a big SEC football fan and always has been. IDK if that will affect his decision-making process or not WRT to a DIS buyout.

The only high probability outcome of all this is that we are seeing the sun set on the empire Walt Disney built. That is a sad day for all Americans. Bob Iger and his woke minions that brought this about.

I’ve heard WayStar is also in back channel talks. Tom Wambsgans and Bob Iger were recently sighted having dinner in NYC.

It is, but less so every year. That's why it's getting auctioned off.

Nah.

A few are loss leaders by design. Amazon uses it as a hook for Prime. Hulu is profitable by itself but mixed into its owners' (CBS + Disney) other streaming service money.

Disney+ is expected to be profitable next year. YoutubeTV is growing a huge clip. Sling is obviously profitable. So are outliers like Tubi.

I’m almost certain they’re making less than .50 cent per play on streaming services.

Of course they are. A play does not equal a purchase.

I’m interested to see what they do with parks and resorts. Doesn’t really fit Apple’s interest.

Yet it's the cash cow part of the business for Disney. It always makes money even when other parts of Disney have ups and downs (other than the covid shutdown). The huge profit from the parks is what allows disney to easily weather flops in other areas.

Even if Apple acquired Disney (which they probably won't), Disney theme parks would almost certainly be spun out as part of the deal. Apple has no interest in it.

I think the B10 will slowly but surely build itself into an able competitor on the football field to the SEC as recruits start to perceive it as the best conference.

I don't see that happening. The best athletes in the country will still on average prefer to play close to home where family can drive to see them play. Plus that cold weather in the rust belt sucks arse.

I don’t think it is a slam dunk but it is interesting that Apple got floated as a suitor in reputable business news recently and shortly after Disney is going about exactly what they need to do to get purchased.

I don’t know if Apple is a legitimate suitor though. They were too committed to doing it their way to win the NFL Sunday Ticket contract over Google. The closer corporate relationship between Apple and Disney does lend some credence that those negotiation points could be mended.

Still, I think Disney is doing things that suggest they want to “right size” for a purchaser. Cut the excess nobody who will be bidding is interested in inheriting.

We should have known when we learned that U2 is his favorite band and follows them all over the country.

If Disney can do anything I applaud it would be moving ESPN to a standalone streaming service. Hulu Live is now $85 a month. I’d pay $50 a month for 4 months a year just to watch football. No need for the rest of the garbage on cable television.

This will happen after the current tv contracts expire. The landscape is changing. It started with Amazon airing the Thursday games. I'll bet they get the rights to a few CFB games soon too.

But I'm with you. I don't need HGTV or whatever.
