I have to think White's hiring of Heupel was much more based on familiarity than football considerations.

Familiarity played a role. But when Freeze was nixed by the SEC and James Franklin wanted Saban money and the Clemson OC backed out he made more sense than the rest.

Nobody wanted Gus. Literally nobody. The majority wanted Lane Kiffin or Hugh Freeze. Next was James Franklin. Those were than fan tier 1 or 1A splash hires. Gus was nixed by the SEC, Lane is the new Gruden and Franklin wanted Saab money. I personally wanted Freeze.

I know you have a habit of saying that. In the meantime, they got a hell of a thread going right now on volnation about missing out on the Gus Bus. And not the first thread a vol OP has brought up on the subject during this coaching search.
Huge Freeze was always in deep hockey with the SEC and Gruden is just a tradition. Kiffin was more about never getting over the girl that left you. Now, maybe you get Franklin and that splash hire, but you would have had to throw some crazy money at him. Barner GUS BUS money. With the mess up there I would have done it.

Agree. Even if Gus isn't the one to take UT to the playoffs if he could have gotten UT to consistent 7 or 8 win seasons and some wins over Saban it would be a step up and the you can look for the championship coach.

Nobody knows how Huepel and Harsin will do in the SEC. Neither's track record leaves much room for optimism, but you just don't know

Harsin is the worst coach Boise has had in quite awhile. And that is one of the best G5 schools. Huepel's record got worse every year at UCF.
