JMO but Nick made a great choice when he declined (if that did happen) the Horn HC position. He would have had success however the Big 12 doesn't allow great defensive teams such as Nick depends on. Bob Stoops is a great football coach and he struggled to stop all those spread teams year after year.

Texas Football might be one of the more overrated things in all of sports.

The 2005 Rose Bowl has to be 1/3 of programming of the Longhorn Network.

Texas has been underachieving since 2010. Alot of that starts at the top. Luckily for Texas they currently have a good ad (arguably the best in the big 12) and a staff that has ties to Texas high school coaches again. Will they capitalize off it? Idk. Tom herman has secretly bought mack brown to help with recruiting. The boosters didn't like charlie strong. But they seem to really like herman. Tom Herman has a a-hole mentality which is perfect for UT.

It wasn't Texas' defense that let them down. It was their offense. They recruited for a spread.

Then Saban beat them in 09 and Mack Brown decided he needed to change the offense to try and compete with Bama in "smash mouth" football

It was a combination of this and missing out on the big time QBs (another poster listed them earlier). Missing on guys like Luck, RG3, Manziel, Stidham, hell even Mayfield, is going to set you back regardless of what else you do.

That list of college talent is immense, and to miss on all of them as the premiere in-state school is unacceptable.

IF Saban had taken the Texas job, and IF the school AND alumni had given him total control of football operations (as UA did), UT would be so for ahead of the rest of the college football world that everybody else would be playing for 2nd place....but that control will never happen in Austin...too many egos.

EDIT: and Saban knew it.

Since 2010, their record stands at 53-48. Everything collapsed for them when Mack Brown decided he wanted to change offenses to be more like Alabama. It's also funny that during the summer of 2010, Texas and its fans thought so highly of themselves what with the Longhorn Network and conference realignment. Their egos have definitely taken a beating since that time.

It didn’t help that while they were going through that transition is when the long time doormats in that conference started playing good football. Oklahoma State and Baylor became title contenders, TCU came into the conference and started winning. Tech had a few good team.

No Saban didn't break texas, Mack Brown pulled a Gene Stallings. I love Gene and what he did to bring us back to the pinnacle in 92 but it is well documented he got lazy and complacent after that. He was from the old school and thought a national title brought him lifelong job security. Right after the 92 title Gene was outrecruited BADLY by Terry Bowden the next spring. The brass at Bama saw it and questioned Gene. He signed players like Lance Tucker and Freddie Kitchens who had no business at Alabama.

Gene was questioned about his 94 class and the lack of star talent and he responded by saying, yea, we missed on some guys but if they want to come to Bama they will no matter what I do. We knew then he had checked out, Mack stopped recruiting like he had in 2001 and 02 and got the feeling that kids would flock to Texas after the 05 title.

The boosters didn’t like Strong because

A) He had three All-Americans and still couldn’t beat the likes of Kansas, and
B) Patterson hired him without checking with them first. Red McCombs got angry because Patterson was stupid enough to believe that as AD it was his job to hire the HC and not just be a rubber stamp.

The media sucked so much USC dong that season that they had to declare the 2005 longhorn the greatest team ever to make up for their choke job.

His knee was down.

Usc had to forfeit that 05 season anyways and bush got his heisman stripped due to the cheating scandal. Texas would have had the natty awarded regardless. The ncaa is soft today agianst cheating.

Mack broke Texas.. he & his old fogies quit the day after VY went off on SC.

Muschamp & Applewhite carried the coaching pretty much on their own. The inside stories of complacency & abandonment are simply incredible.. frick Mack Brown basically.

It's weirder that you boys from the state of Texas are keeping tabs on what teams I post about here. You are doing a great job.

Mack Brown got really lazy in recruiting in his last few years. He would fill up the class on junior day with "guys who wanted to be there." Many of the best players in Texas did not commit early, and so Texas missed out on them.
